Dead ass the first time I've seen "flowerverse' in my 16yrs of reading yaoi (yes I'm ancient 1998) drop some recommendations!

It comes from the doujin scene rather than BL manga itself. Bakaupdates probably has a tag for it, idk.

I'm 33 and I know people way older than me that know of hanahaki disease.

In terms of tropes it's not really used that often, but it isn't a "verse." Verse implies there are two sides. Alphas and omegas. Espers and their guides. Forks and... cakes...

Anyways, hanahaki is a disease caused by unrequited love and can lead to the death of the one afflicted. If the love becomes mutual, the disease goes away. If it remains unrequited then the person runs the risk of dying 'cause the flowers literally sprout from inside their lungs, ultimately drowning them.

I think hanahaki is more popular in fanfics than in manga/webtoons. I do wonder tho why no one ever tried to use it on these mediums like it isn't even ip protected or something. Hanahaki would make such good angst man.

..... Over 20 years of manga/yaoi and this is first time for me too. I have once or twice in passing read series that person sprouting flowers, but that wasn't part of any verse or named as any specific disease etc.

To be fair, it's not just Yaoi, I have read a lot of different stuff... Because I'm "old", and I have had more time than most. When I started I had to find places to download fan translations/or something copied that wasn't available in my country.
Plus, I started reading yaoi way too young... But at least that time starter Yaois weren't as bad as Killing Stalking.

That is also why I'm kinda amazed to learn that the flower thing is an actual thing, when I have seen max 2 mangas that had people growing flowers from their body, and there wasn't any connecting theme otherwise.

But like someone already said... It's probably more fanfic type of thing than actually idea in main media.

It's 'cause, and my unc ass is gonna sound even older, thanks to covid lockdowns BL had a massive boom in popularity. Growing up my fujo/fudan group was very, very small. Like, maybe 5 people both offline and online combined lol nowadays everyone and their mom is into BL. I remember having to scrub the internet to find 3 episode BL OVAs. Now, everyone anime release season we get several BL title announcements and even movies lol

But it's a monkey paw for a lot of us older fans. It's amazing that it has become more accessible! But in return I have to deal with insufferable teens trying to preach to me about BL and crazy people running artists off socmed platforms just 'cause they made something they didn't like.

But yes, it is more popular in fanfic works. I think it originated in shojo manga right before 2010? And there are a few bl titles that use the trope or something similar to it.

I do wish they'd use it more often tho... I live for angst and having my guts ripped out emotionally lol

It started as a trope for shojo manga and was heavily adopted for fanfic works years later. I believe the first usage of the trope was in Hanahaki Otome? Either way, it's been around since before 2010 lol

Oh, I'm not really sure where it originated. My first contact with this trope was through fanfiction and I discovered fanfics quite late around 2018.

I have read quite a lot of shoujo manga at that point of my life and still somehow missed it.
TBF, I'm in a country that often didn't exist for a long time to outside world if you wanted something, we at least had one shop selling some English prints already in a main city...

But If I wanted more of my poor child arse didn't have money, I had to learn to dig deep into internet. Good that most links in IRC (not gallery) were something to trusted so I never downloaded anything bad.
But generally Shoujo was easier to get than Yaoi, so that was the most what I read.

Viewfinder "slice show" was probably first yaoi "anime" I ever saw, but yaoi didn't get much anime anyway because mangakas most of the time couldn't even write BL in too positive way (expected some mild Shounen-ais) until society changed. At least there seem to be some silent rule that if you make yaoi, it has to me violent or characters have to have phobia of gays/they can't accept it.

That is why many older yaoi series are a bit weird and doesn't seem to have full plots, I bet they were forced to cut out stuff that was too nice. But I'm wandering of the topic and just speculating.
