Abit random, but why is passing out/fainting or blacking out (from alcohol) such a theme in mangas?

Is it just a silly trope of is it rooted in some sort of wider historical or cultural context I'm missing?

I just find it a bit silly lol, why are you collapsing from exhaustion or a lack of sleep. Lie down, call in sick, or at least accidentally fall asleep in a meeting first.

Blacking out usually doesn't mean you can't walk or physically get to your home, it just means you can't remember. Why is everyone always being carried home! If you really can't move, then you're not going to magically perk up to have sex (consensually or otherwise).

Also the alcohol you need to consume to black out for an entire night is substantial, and would result in way more of a terrible hangover then is ever depicted. Are people just constantly getting roofied.

I'm surprised people are confused. Older brother was under immense pressure his whole life - a real victim that Asian appearance and success focused tiger parenting.

In an attempt to get take the pressure of his younger brother, he deliberately took on the load of their expectations and discouraged his parents meddling by saying MC wasn't capable. I think his plan was to be successful enough he could come home and 'save' his brother, and they'd move out and away from their parents.

The issue is despite his attempts, the absent parenting impacted both of them anyway. They've both deeply internalised their parents expectations. So MC has withdrawn himself and disregards all his achievements because he assumes nobody really cares (especially when compared to his brother). While his older brother, like many high achievers, has worked himself into the ground and is burnt out. Neither like asking for help because they're hyper independent.

But they're still siblings and likely love each other. Both just feel alienated and don't know how to connect, hence the suggestion of money. I find it weird how people would say there's some odd motive. He has consistently messaged and sought out his younger brother (who is actively avoiding him lol). if he knows he's motivated by money, and has the means, why wouldn't you offer....to spend time with someone you care about?

Only up to chapter 31, could someone I guess spoil me - I don't understand the animosity towards Yuri? And why does he allow Yonhee to treat him like that?m

It's also been a while since I read In the eyes of Sora so maybe there's context there. I'm just impatient, idm spoilers lol.

This is a really compelling story. Things are always really interesting when you have morally grey, complex characters. I like when an author can depict legit chemistry between two people who have almost no interest in the other beyond a means to an end.

In saying that, I've noticed I actually really don't vibe with masochism in stories. I've noticed I actually find the look of injuries kind of distressing and absolutely not hot. I just keep thinking about traumatic brain injuries and getting 1 too many concussions and not waking up lol.

I like this story but I find the dialogue a bit stilted, so the characters kind of come off as somewhat inconsistent. I guess there isn't a whole lot of internal dialogue either, except a few thought bubbles, probs adds to the issue.

Also lol @ them having to climb up a ladder to a hovering helicopter.

I'd be soo fkn salty if I got hired as a celebrity body guard and was then expected to reenact the full christopher nolan dark knight special. Didn't know we needed a whole fkn armada out here.

This story is so wack, there's NO CONTEXT provided ever lol.

A bit rogue of me, I've literally just started this story. But I've noticed that when stories like these are written by Korean authors they seem to struggle with conceptualising multiculturalism or like the diaspora experience because of they've never experienced a non homogenous context. Also SK doesn't allow dual nationality lol.

This isn't even about this story in particular haha, just something I've noticed. Just someone being born and raised in Canada is also Canadian, not just a Korean who's now chosen to move 'home'. I just feel like there's an undercurrent of assumed nationalism, that I think people who've experienced otherwise may not inherently develop. And not just SK, but I notice it with loads of countries particularly those which require mandatory military service e.g., Singapore (the propaganda is crazzzy in singapore), Israel, SK etc.

aha

POV of being buried alive

Hm

The author struggles with developing meaningful endings, they're so weirdly timed and the mc's feelings and behaviours never match the context.

Anon created a topic of Stigma (Doo Down)

You know, these stories make a lot of sense when you frame them around the concept of 'what would someone with the emotional capacity of a toddler do?'

I honestly love any scene involving their families. Like it has such unhinged energy.

Um

Idk Dan's behaviour seems consistent with a diagnosis of dependent personality disorder.

Yes homosexuality is criminalised in many places, mostly within western and north Africa countries and some places within Asia irl. It usually occurs in countries that are culturally conservative and have an enmeshment of religion and government. Is that the setting of this story? I find it fkn weird this author would implement it like it's a funny plot point for mc to move out and not a depiction of legitimate systemic hardcore discrimination. Oh but its ~fiction~, fkn please.

This boy think with his dick, in that he doesn't think at all he just has sex lol. I'm straight - nah just sex no homo, I sort of like and worry for u - be my fuck buddy 'officially', I'm jealous - we should have sex, like right now when you're asleep

Anon created a topic of Salty Lust

I feel like its confusing because MC keeps calling main owen (lol this story is chaotic) Asperier and then also calls Asperier (scarf boi) by the same name. Is that because initially when he met them, thats the name he was given? What was space captain called again

Anon created a topic of Jinx

MC is like a passive doll and has no real personality or sense of self.

Side note - for anyone who like knows the sport, I get the idea is that you lose the water weight to weigh in, then put it back on before the fight. But it seems...not stupid - like redundant? I understand it can be done safely, but idk doesn't seem to be in the best interest of the athlete and creates a system where everyone has to do it. Why don't people just fight in a specific weight class and ban the dehydration thing. Or safely lose the weight - surely being that big you're required to sustain a huge calorie intake, that could be cut down - but maybe that sacrifices strength? idk. Can someone with a more nuanced understanding explain why it's done and kept around?

What a dysfunctional and sweet couple haha

Share with me - what grinds your gears in yaoi? I don't mean small things like "I don't vibe with love triangles" Like the stuff you've had a proper think about. Because I'm weird and think too much:

For me it's a stupid, obviously illegal or illogical situation that makes me go 'what fkn society is this character living in?' - e.g., some kid being forced to pay off huge loans for a hospital bill or gambling debt they didn't wrack up. And like immediately being forced into sex work?!

Why doesn't this person have access to social services, the police....support?! You could even declare bankruptcy first. These stories are usually set in developed countries, so I find it weird. And no, ofc art doesn't have to follow reality. I just think its lazy story telling. If I were to guess its to do with weird stand in hyper heteronormative roles of yaoi i.e., one partner being weaker, stupid and vulnerable and the other the strong more powerful """""provider""""""" (see, ABO and the madonna whore complex, but this is another discussion lol).

I think its just my age haha and my profession which makes me look at these things as abit ridiculous, and sure there are stories which qualify the above but break the mould and loads of other great romances and plot lines. But yeah, what's everyone else's issues.
