Hey! As a gay guy, I'm curious to find out what other gay guys who read yaoi think about the representation of homosexuality in yaoi.

What aspects do you identify with? Are there any you dislike?

For example: I really enjoy manga where the sex is more realistic (it hurts the first time or they struggle), or manga where they also address issues of homophobia. I really enjoy being able to imagine fluffy or happy relationships that I feel I might never get in real life. I even like mpreg manga, as I would love to be able to have my own kids. I dislike manga that make gay relationships follow sexist norms, like when they make the bottom too submissive or effeminate and the top very dominant. Sometimes I also think that it would be nice to representation of body types that aren't so twinky (like a little bit of body hair, or less skinny for example).

I ask because bara is seen as the 'gay' manga, whereas yaoi is seen for mainly females. However, I personally much prefer yaoi.

Well, I judge them if I like the plot, art and characters. If the art is so good and the plot is meh, I'll prolly dig it.

Though I am not homosexual or a guy, I geniunely found your analysis/opinion of yaoi very interesting, I seldom see a fundashi on here, so I was very intrigued with seeing your take on yaoi as it does, at times, portray BL is a very less than appropriate manner, such as glorifying rape, stereotyping the seme/uke roles, etc. and I have been told many times by people that enjoying yaoi mangas/being a fujoshi is an offense to homosexual guys in real life due to the misunderstanding that we see gay men as nothing than "objects for imagination" which is so far from the truth but apparently a common misconception so I am honestly relieved to know that that is not true for everyone. Oof, I just found out there are a suprising amount of fundashi than I orginally expected so let me rephrase it from "I seldom see a fundashi on here" to "I seldom realised I saw a fundashi on here" (๑•ㅂ•)و✧

Usually with yaoi I don't really care for realism as long as it doesn't fall into any like stereotyped relationships (seme is overbearingly masculine and uke is excessively feminine). Like these relationships can happen but I just can't connect to it since I have a mix of a masculine and feminine side.

I say that I don't care for realism because yaoi is usually just fap material (sorry for being a perverted bastard). But I really enjoy it when the relationships feel real and go past sex because that's something I really want in the future. A happy and goofy couple that still bangs a bit.

But I love seeing characters that seem like one personality be flipped because it shows the flexibility of relationships and the extent of them. I also love seeing yaoi with the couple having kids (already or now adopting them) because I'd love to have kids of my own (even if they're adopted) and seeing those mangas makes me believe that I could be a great dad even if I were to be in a homosexual relationship.

Thank you for your response! I personally don't think that enjoying BL as a fujoshi is offensive. I think that for a lot of fujoshi it isn't about fetishizing gay guys inappropriately or just objectifying them. In fact, a lot of studies about BL show that for both writers and readers it is an inherently feminist idea, whereby they are allowed to explore ideas of sexuality and gendered power in an inverted reality, which they wouldn't usually get to do in many patriarchal or sexist societies. I think that some fujoshi take it too far when they begin to project BL tropes/stereotypes onto real-life gay guys, or obsess over them, but as long as a fujoshi can maintain the distinction between fiction and reality, I think it is a totally healthy hobby! Ultimately it isn't about gay guys at all, if you think about it, hehe. I think that is part of the reason I asked, as although yaoi is supposedly about gay guys, on a deeper level it is really about female writers and readers. However, I get something out of it, so I was curious to see if other guys did too! Perhaps there is an interesting link between gay guys and fujoshis!

Thanks for your response! I totally agree with you. I do enjoy the fantasy aspects and don't mind tolerating a little bit of weird stereotyping.
Also, you're not a perverted bastard, we've all fapped to yaoi, even the fujoshis haha!! But yes, I'm exactly the same as you about being able to process ideas about future relationships or children through the stories.
I hope you find your goofy guy and have beautiful kids together! I'm sure you'll be an amazing dad!!

Haha thanks mate. It's all a dream though. I'm not sure if my parents would still even accept me if I came out, but hey eloping and getting married in Vegas works too.

I remember not that long ago there were "no girls on the internet". I'm positive there are many, many guys reading yaoi. Some straight up pretend to be women but most just keep to themselves. We're already a small number of people participating in any discussion, I see the same usernames floating around over and over again, so it's impossible to count how many men are here only going by responses. None of my male gay friends are into manga/anime but I'm sure if they were they would read yaoi.

Anyway, most of the stuff I read is stupid. I see no representation there, I'm completely detached from any emotional response since I feel like the characters are barely human... and I like it like that lol. 100% fantasy fuel, no reality involved. It's fun, I consume trash similar to how people are into celebrity gossip.

That's the surface tho. The well intended, carefully crafted stories affect me a lot. There's a lot of suffering here. I've been stuck in a revisionist loop of my past relationships and there is just no way for me to talk about it with anyone. Fiction, paradoxically, grounds me. It gives me a framework to think about stuff in a different perspective.

Oops this was way longer than it needed to be. YAOI FUN, I HURT SO I ESCAPE! pretty much.
Mpreg is a hard NO for me btw. No, no. No.Oh, god, no.

Agreed, it's a huge disservice to the genre when fujos are all " no bois allowed, yaoi is for straight girls!!"
Like, do they really think there's nothing valuable in the manga they read all day? Do they really think the genre is so bad that there's nothing there for other demographics to enjoy? That's a pretty harsh unintentional critique on the mangas and themselves as well.

Man, kids are awesome. I hope there will be a way for you to have a family just like you're imagining it. I don't have kids of my own, probably never will, but there are children in my life and it's a whole new level of happiness I can't recomend it enough. Best wishes to you.
