Ok so to clarify, the reason why people are mad at Vicente because first he said that he doesnt know how to dance, which is a very basic thing plus he turned down the offer from the person he's engaged with. Dont get me wrong, even if he did do it to distract the attention to him, he could have said that he promised the first dance with his mother rather than saying he doesnt know how to dance.

Now everybody at the ball are using this as an opportunity to gossip and ruin his and mostly his mother's reputation to show her off as an irresponsible mother who neglects her sons education. (Well actually its more of their family's reputation)

So what if its just a dance? Its not that big of an issue... Sadly it is, people are very judgemental back then just like what we do to famous people nowadays. We like to find faults in all they do and gossip about it making them look like the bad guy. Plus like i mentioned earlier, it was his first dance and the lady who is ENGAGED to him, offered to dance but he brings up the excuse of him not knowing how to.

And now that everybody's eyes are mostly on his mother, the duchess takes this as an opportunity to ask her to apologize in place of her daughter and her. Yeah she didnt want to dance with the asshole duke but bitches will be bitches, like mother like daughter.

Anyways fuck them i swear i have a feeling vicente's father will cut into the scene or she miserably apologizes.
