Yaoi was developed in a time where women in Shoujo manga were usually assaulted and treated badly while men were portrayed as strong and bold so some authors used two guys to explore an equal dynamic and get creative with plots. This got shifted as it became more mainstream to make one guy effeminate and essentially the subject of a "lesser role".

There's a lot of beautiful Manga but none could catch the same charm as Hagio Moto's art until now (for me).
