They weren't trying to fuck him doe it was the build up for him to realize that he got so hung up on the system and how it controlled the world he lived in that he himself got played by it. He never had to listen to it, the system manipulated him into thinking it was something he had to do when he didn't have to do it?? That's what I saw it as. Ofc I thought it was weird but it meant smth to the plot, the fact he overcame that gave him a reason to believe his fate with Ilya wasn't fake or forced.
