those who suffer from depression are easily prone to committing suicide when even one thing important to them (regardless of if it seems insignificant to outsiders) goes wrong—which in phillip’s case is sahan not visiting him. in short, a popular term that is very suitable for this scenario is “final straw”, aka “the last in a series of unpleasant events that finally makes you feel that you cannot continue to accept a bad situation” (cambridge dictionary). yes, there were likely more reasonable decisions to make, but suicidal people at their breaking point tend to never see past: “if things don't go right for me this one last time, all i can do in response is kill myself”. “being cognitively inflexible prevents individuals from engaging in coping responses that facilitate effective problem solving during times of stress, leading to higher degrees of hopelessness and suicidal ideation” (NIH)
especially when you just returned to earth, only to realize you’ve fallen behind 10 years, it’d be difficult to reintegrate in life and accept all the changes. for example, veterans are at heightened risk for depression, anxiety, ptsd, etc because they struggle with returning and settling into society (NVHS). to be specific, they often have trouble with social/cultural disconnection, identity crisis, and employment barriers (NVHS). we can connect some of these things with phillip and understand that multiple factors led to phillip’s death, not just one little plan gone wrong. also random but either way, i have a feeling that phillip ending his life over sahan not visiting him suggests that he was already planning to kill himself AFTER their reunion. since sahan didn’t visit, he likely thought that there was no point in delaying the act.
reading this chapter and only thinking: “phillip is a stupid sad guy who killed himself over something minor” and “because of his impulsive action, others have to suffer the responsibility” isn’t right imo. it frames everything into one big picture and encourages false perception upon people struggling mentally. yes, the manhwa has yet to provide enough information on phillip, but an easy and better reaction to this chapter would be wishing phillip was more properly supported in terms of mental health recovery and safety. hope you learned new stuff bro thx for reading

I’d like to add how something is definitely fishy with Phillip’s relationship with the guy on the phone.
their relationship seems interesting indeed, but i can’t get a hint of anything sketchy such as bad blood between the two. the way the scarred man expresses his grief (empty, still, but still crying) suggests an oddly tight and emotional relationship without foul, rivaling(?) undertones to it. the additional fact that he’s the one relaying the news to sahan (and is the only one inside that depressing funeral home) implies that he’s one of the more dearly significant and present people in phillip’s life.
based on the novel, he may be in relation to phillip’s death because of his scar (i’m guessing it has a backstory involving the two based on cliche) serving as an irreversible physical reminder of their past and a sense of responsibility that phillip felt unable to complete after losing 10 years together
