I think the reason why cheating hurts the most is the fact that it wasn't a "mistake" as most people claim it to be but simply a choice. People chose to betray the trust you have given them whether it was "in the heat of the moment" or "I was drunk" they chose to lose valuable time they could've spent with you to spend with another person.
