One of my "absolute super dupeeer totally favorite" writing tricks is when an author introduces a child and an adult, spends half the story building their relationship and then decides "don't worry guys!! we'll just throw in a time skip". Sure the time skip might fit the chronology but c'mon let's not pretend its main purpose isn't to age the young......
