Some bits of the near the end of the novel parts
Grayson loves Dane so much that he thinks that it's better Dane gets handicapped instead of died from saving people.
He even thought of killing Dane and kill himself after that so Dane will be forever be his. He hates the fact that after Dane gets fully recovered, he will be back to be a firefighter and risk his life again.
This was after Dane got critically injured from saving Grayson and tried to stop a ticking bomb that would kill residents from the landslide from the effect of the bomb
At this point Grayson realised that his intrusive thoughts are slowly turning real.
Grayson asked Dane on a date that he owed him one after he fully recovered. So they went to Disneyland.
During the fireworks, Grayson told him that they should end this relationship. Cut off contact and never see each other again
Dane was dumbfounded and tried to calm him down as Grayson confessed the intrusive thoughts to him
Grayson was in tears, repeating said that this is not Love.
Love shouldn't be this ugly.
"There's no way something this painful, this miserable and horrific, could be love"
So Grayson cut off contact with Dane and that's the part of "the last act of love is letting it go"
So after that both of them slowly heals their broken heart.
One is miserable and afraid that his love will kill the person he loves the most, so it's better to let go of this love
The other one is in denial and believes that he is incapable to love but slowly start to realise that his world is empty without that other person in his life
How do they get back together? Who initiates the reunion

He made Grayson who cut him off and pushed him away, desperately searching for him
He got injured in fire accident and Grayson heard that theres a big fire so he watched the broadcast and confirmed Dane was handling the fire
He immediately rushed to the place and searched for Dane
Grayson was shaking as he found Dane and said "I rushed over, and damn it, you threw your whole body to save someone's life again, didn't you?"
Dane said it's not worth it to come to back to him. Grayson was expressing how he is genuinely hurt and said "it's you that we're talking about, how could it not worth it"
Seeing Grayson's genuine expression, Dane realized that, no matter how many times he pushed Grayson, he will still be there, not leaving Dane all alone (because Dane believed that he deserves to be left all alone till the end)
So Dane finally acknowledged that he loves Grayson and confessed to Grayson right after that..
He thinks that Grayson is so lovable and he doesn't mind to spend his life, together with Grayson

Grayson stopped bothering Dane after breaking up with him. But then the "so called" fire fighters who got their job by passing the exams and are so devoted in saving people lives, left Dane alone inside the building ( again as usual )which was abt to collapsed. Grayson followed Dane inside the building and said "i knw u will be left alone again". Grayson was like even if they are not together and there's no future, he will still follow him to death every single time. That's when Dane finally accepted his feelings towards Grayson and confessed to Grayson.
