Back in my day, dark romance really was just this. The ML would be a mafia or monster, the world would be fucked up and the romance would be forbidden but there will still be romantic love.
That's why dark romance felt more exciting, the idea of a dark mafia boss showing kindness only to the main character was a heart throb, booktok just got the wrong message and ran with it
