I cannot express how excited I was to read this webtoon. I let it marinate for many months so I can read a full completed season. After many painful hours, I finally finished, and I am so, SO disappointed. Here are my thoughts:
1. Her backstory: it truly just felt like the developed this elaborate warrior background as a tool to rid the FMC of her timid personality. Like, the result of allllllllll of that gruesome expense was that she developed a bubbly and pretty personality, she could fight, and she now cool and smart and also she didn’t have a stutter and had zero awkwardness or social anxiety even though she hadn’t spoken to a single normal human (not counting demons) in years. Like whose OC is this?? Where is her trauma? Where is the pain? How can there have been ZERO negative impacts in her future self psychologically from what happened to her? There is some description of the pain she experiences with her deaths, but it’s glossed over SO QUICKLY. There is ZERO mention of how her backstory affected her mentally throughout the entire first season. Additionally, It took her only 20 days to revamp her ENTIRE personality when?? Like seriously??? YOU WERE BEING EATEN. LIKE DUDE - If I was being eaten my freaking rock monster dogs I think it would take me like 2 months to go insane. I wouldn’t like IMMEDIATELY gain the awesome ability to kill these crazy monster creatures in TWENTY DAYS - what was she eating to survive and gain the muscle to fight back?? She was weak and frail when she first transported but with zero training or fitness she could kill these monster in under three weeks??? TF???
I’m being reminded of the MMC from the webtoon “swordsman king survival records.” A similar experience happened to the MC where he was accidentally transported to this hellscape and just had to indefinitely survive. While the aithor put a bit of a numerous spin on it, there was nooooo question about the MC’s sanity. He had clearly developed a darker perspective on the world from his trauma and loneliness. The author executed this backstory much better.
Same with the MC from “broken ring.” OG fans will know how well the author portrayed an FMC’s lasting trauma from previous incarnations or timelines.
The MMC: this man is boring and so, SO ANNOYING. Useless, dry, not charming, and treated her like garbage then randomly and arbitrarily fell in love with her. He was so, SO forgettable I honestly don’t remember his name and I finished this webtoon an hour ago. He was the classic “cold Duke of the north” but then didn’t do anything special or memorable the entire first season. Absolute slop of an MMC.
The pacing and plot: I felt that the pacing and plot points were off. Many times, I felt that moments or events could have been expanded on. For example, why was the emperor portrayed as a loving husband to the emperor than just randomly had a mistress?? Like what a curve ball but not in a fun way??? There was no explanation or addition reasoning. Also, was the princess his child or not?? The author did NOT make it super clear if the emperor ACTUALLY cheated. To add on, why did the MMC mention ominously to the empress that crying would break the emperor’s heart and why didn’t the author show the importance of this scene happening in a future chapter if she gave the empress advice in such an ominous way?? What was the point?? I can’t remember alllllll the times this happened becuase there were so many moments where I felt the author introduced a plot or alluded to something mysterious happening in the future and then NEVER followed up.
Conclusion: I think I’m super upset becuase the premise of this story was SO GOOD. I think this is why it has so many fans. The art was amazing and the potential for it to be great was HUGE. But the execution was sloppy and rushed. Feel free to disagree ofc but after reading webtoons like “broken ring”, “your Ryan”, “miss peddleton”, etc., my expectations were high and I was massively disappointed esp after seeing the rating.
This is genuinely one of the most disgusting, deeply disturbing, and vile webtoons I’ve ever read. Constant grape, maximum cruelty and zero accountability for the ML, and an MC who is written conveniently to have zero mental trauma from the abuse he has suffered. I read a bit of the novel and it does not get better. If the MC even kind of hurts the ML, the author waxes petty about his guilt while writing an ML that has super human strength and no humanity or kindness towards his partner. Disgusting.
I'm not a fan of this series. Not just the fact it's disturbing, I also find the writing rather shallow and uninteresting. It tries to be deep, but it really boils down to a psycho trying so desperately to get someone's attention, and that's it.
That said, I dislike it when people resort to insults in regard to other people taste. It's fine to consider their taste terrible, but let's not use taste in fiction as a measure of character. The ability to separate fiction and reality is getting increasingly rare nowadays and that's concerning.
i insult people incapable of critically consuming media. they don’t question the reasons behind why they mindlessly consume everything without a second thought, it’s purely shallow entertainment for them. they don’t really deserve to be treated with respect when they’re incapable of adult conversations in the first place.
if someone fantasizes about incest/rape/pedophilia etc, it absolutely *is* telling about their character, considering the means in which theyll stoop to in order to get off. saying people just “can’t separate fiction and reality” is a both a laughable strawman and a sad cover.
The first time I read this webtoon I absolutely loved it. The story felt unique and I enjoyed the MC’s rational personality. But I reread this today and realized quite a few things.
Brainwashing tropes are always tricky. A character has been mind controlled to do things and act in a way that they CANNOT control. They are, essentially, not conscious and have had their autonomy ripped away from them without their consent. Isn’t this just rape??? You have these male characters who are preyed upon by this woman (Grace) who lusts after time and wants to collect them like dolls. Why are they being punished for being used and abused??? After breaking free of the mind control, they CLEARLY reflected feelings of distaste towards Grace.
The female lead , Selonia, is justified in her anger towards them before she found out they were being controlled. She STILL reserves the right to feel upset that about the situation as a whole. But as rationally as she was portrayed, she is incredibly self-centered in that she only cares about how HER men were taken away from HER. She was NOT upset on behalf of her friends. She was NOT angry or vengeful for her friends who were used by some horrendously selfish people. I wish the author depicted her as a bit more emotionally intelligent in this regard. If the roles were reversed, and SHE was brainwashed by a man who FORCED her to get engaged to him and fawn over him, how disgusting would that feel?
Additionally, how are none of the male leads traumatized from being brainwashed??? The webtoon showed that they remembered everything they said to Selenia, so they have all their memories from their time being brainwashed. Why is their first thought “OMG how could I be mean to Selonia??” Shouldn’t it be something like “Oh dear god I was made touch and obsess over a person against my will, I feel sick to my stomache - I had no control over my actions and now my life has been ruined help I need therapy.”
I also think the ML is super dry and boring sorry not sorry. I just can’t justify liking this webtoon

THIS IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. I could cry this is soooo good, I’ve been slapped in the face with so much webtoon slop that has zero substance that I started to lose faith but WOW this was a great read.
