It could be that the author wants to illustrate what is called <internalized homophobia> _
In that case the homophobic/toxic remarks the ML made, where directed towards himself more than anything ! And I find that very positive that the readers are refusing to romanticize toxicity <333 _ it's the best thing ! Just read something that gives you the right feels !! We as readers are responsible for choosing the material we want to read !!! We ARE responsible of our wellbeing ! No need to traumatize ourselves with something we feel is just not right for us _ /// personnally i like the other characters (girlfriend and roommate that's why i am choosing to trust the author for now. But i am ok with this level of toxicity probably because i am a woman and i am hetero so i don't absorb homophobic remarks as poison _ those lines are not toxic for me as a reader so it's ok for me to continue to read (we need to take care of ourselves as readers. It's good to refuse anything we feel toxic for our inner life ) internalized homophobia is a thing, so i am quite curious to see how the author will treat this topic (from a psychological point of view) i am NOT rooting for the ML right now and no i do NOT < ship them > as a couple right now !! Yes the ML is abusive in the sense he is looking to keep the MC to himself , and no he doesn't look like '' boyfriend material '' only jealous and possessive/obsessive, that would not be good as a couple! The MC needs to breathe !!! I want to see the MC happy outside of that suffocating relationship. _ i hope to see a coming of age story for the MC where he can thrive and shine and be happy as a bird,
and become a functionning adult with a good support sytem and true bonds of friendships . . . Whatever the outcome with the ML. Right now the ML is making Isolating remarks to the MC that's what i hate about him, that he doesn't seem able to leave the MC form bounds with other people ! :) but i can see the MC is growing out of '' that cage '' he once was in so i feel good to see that :-) _ for me it's more a coming of age story rather than BL _ i like to watch the characters learn and grow! (I once was in an ''exclusive'' type of friendship so to me this IS therapy to see the MC outgrow the boundaries and learn to fly :-) !! _ that's why i lkke that story it's about freedom and forming multiple friendships bonds with multiple people _ xxx

The BL/yaoi tag is maybe not super appropriate for that story _ to me it's a coming of age + LGBT tag + psychological tag story, which illustrates internalized homophobia (but that's only my bet. For now. That's what i see in it.)

I saw in chapter 4 or 5 it was mentioned that Haebom means sea lion in korean. So i think the creator has used that connection to represent our man here
