How y'all managed to read all the way through and be surprised it ends this way is beyond me. Did you think it'd end with Jaekyung going to therapy and Dan embracing his happy, single life? This is first and foremost a smutty romance lmao next you're gonna tell me you were surprised at the BJ Alex ending.
Am I wrong or are none of Riftan's actions actually problematic?
Reply and let me know of any I missed obviously, I've been reading a while maybe I just forgot, but I'm pretty sure people are mad at this guy for being emotional which is insane.
This is going to be a long ride tho.
So according to Riftan haters, they claim he raped Maxi on their first wedding night, which I personally do not agree with, though I can at least understand where some of them are coming from after someone respectfully explain their perspective better to me. But even then, I still don’t think it was something intentionally done by riftan the way people make him out to be some kind of raptist monster. Of course, the haters won’t agree and will immediately call anyone who disagrees a “rape defender” or “apologist,” lol.
They also say he’s abusive and violent simply because he shouts or yells at maxi when he disagrees with some of her decisions or wants to protect her. They call him toxic and possessive because he didn’t want her learning magic at first and because he tried to control certain things in her life. But people ignore the actual context: riftan genuinely believed Maxi was a pampered noble daughter who had always lived a fragile and comfortable life, so he wanted to protect her from danger and provide everything for her himself. His actions came from overprotectiveness, not because he saw her as worthless.
Then there are people calling him some untrained animal who’s overly sexually attracted to his wife because he constantly wants to be close and intimate with her. They twist it into him seeing maxi as nothing more than an object for his toy, which honestly just sounds like people who either don’t read the story properly or already hate him so much that they intentionally interpret everything negatively.
They also claim he hates maxi or doesn’t see her as his equal because he didn’t initially support her learning magic. But again, readers ignore the actual reason behind it: he was terrified she would get hurt because he saw her as physically fragile and wanted to protect her at all costs. It wasn’t because he looked down on her as a woman or didn’t value her.
Another thing people hate him for is not telling maxi about the miscarriage. But readers often forget that the loss affected riftan too. They both lost their child. At the same time, he was leading a war, carrying the lives of countless people on his shoulders, and constantly worrying about maxi’s safety. Yet a lot of readers only sympathize with maxi and completely dismiss riftan’s emotional pain in that situation.
And finally, novel readers who hate him claims he never had character development and that his flaws only became worse as the story progressed. They say maxi was the only one who truly developed while riftan remained a “trash husband.” But I’ve also seen many novel readers say the opposite, that they grew to understand and love riftan’s character more over time once they understood his trauma, insecurities, and background as someone shaped by war and hardship. To them, riftan is a deeply flawed person trying his best to become better for both himself and Maxi, which is why they were happy with their ending together.
Out of everything, the only thing I can agree with is the yelling part, altho I might understand why a man like him acts or vocally behave aggressive, I still don't like it and want him to change and make progress from such flaws, but I don't think it's something enough for me to hate him over and sum his character as some aggressive and abusive husband, when I can understand the reason he is the way he is and wish he treats maxi better while hoping for a happy ending
Riftan has a controlling and obsessive nature towards Maxi. He’s gonna isolate her from the world and make choices for her. I personally think in the novel he starts to denature from his obsession after the separation period from Maxi and actually starts to think about his choices from the past as bad
Riftan is not problematic. People just either don't have enough reading comprehension, or they project they own negative experiences onto Riftan. Dude's just a muscle-head with poor communications skills that is devoted to his wife.
Expressing his concerns and worries through yelling is not abusive. Trying to stop Maxi from doing certain things out of concern for her safety and out of his own guilt is not abusive. There is also a difference between protective and obsessive.
He has never insulted Maxi. He has never undermined Maxi. He has never wanted to harm to Maxi. He is not verbally abusive. He is not physically abusive. He is not mentally abusive.
And anyone who dies on the hill of "Well he shouldn't have talked to her like that" does not understand that this is a story about two people who have shit communication skills learning to understand each other.
Praise, also, people tend to forget he only grew up in violence and people yelling at him, nobody taught him yelling is stressing and bad because that's the system he grew up with...people tend to only see one pov (maxi here) and forget that unreliable narrator exist. Nobody in this story is perfect and that's why it's so well.written nnn
Sit down, shut up, this is good fucking food. Why read for 150+ chapters just to shit on one of the main characters every damn update?
God forbid a fantasy medieval character doesn't behave how a real life person from the modern day would.
God forbid a man be protective of his wife who notoriously overworks herself and had 2 near-death experiences within the year!
God forbid a man yearns!! Pines even!! God forbid he has a crush on a woman. Do NOT act like you haven't dreamt up scenarios in your head about your crushes, fucking liars.
God forbid the miscommunication be believable.
God forbid a woman wants to trust a man who has shown to be nothing but completely and ardently in love with her. But also God forbid she hesitate because of her past trauma. God forbid she wants to get back to work and forget it all happened. It's like y'all don't want women being happy and cared for
