There was a lot going on in the first series but basically, Semin grew up in a rough household where his dad used to beat the shit out of him all the time and his brother was a big troublemaker who got most of their mom's attention. They were also really poor and the mom worked a lot to support the family. The girl who is his bff and a lesbian (Kyunghie? I can't remember how to spell it) was his only friend in high school and made him feel special so he developed a mad crush on her. He also has trouble interacting with people, partially from being abused, partially because he's clearly on the spectrum, and struggles with interpersonal relationships and being touched. The day before the college entrance exam his dad beats him badly and he calls his friend for help and she calls the cops and the dad ends up going to jail, but the stress makes him bomb the exam so he doesn't get into the college he wants and has to start at a different school while he improves his score, then he transfers to the art school his bff is at. So while this is happening there's a male influencer he really likes and sort of becomes obsessed with to the point that he starts copying everything this guy does, from the clothes he wears, to the movies he likes, to the art he makes. He even creates a personal blog talking about how he likes the guy and is inspired by him. So then on the 1st day of a new school year, the influencer ends up being in some of his classes (it's Yohan), and makes the effort to talk to him and be friendly. So Yohan starts being super nice to Semin and sitting by him in class and inviting him into his friend group and making an effort to be in his life. Semin enjoys becoming friends but his inferiority complex is so bad that he keeps copying Yohan, sometimes subconsciously, sometimes knowingly, including a lot of his art and school projects (since they are art majors). Semin's bff notices him getting close to Yohan and warns him to stay away because her friend used to date him and he wasn't nice, but Semin doesn't really believe her. (It turns out that the ex was the one who wasn't nice but Yohan just accepted whatever people wanted to believe. Yohan and Semin both consider themselves straight but Yohan very clearly develops a crush on Semin and doesn't try to hide it. Semin also develops strong feelings for Yohan, although he denies that they are romantic for longer because he doesn't want to let go of the crush he has on his bff, even though she's been in a relationship for a couple years and he knows she's a lesbian. So towards the end of the semester, some people in their department notice the similarities in all Semin and Yohan's work and make a post about it on the college message board and Semin is so embarrassed he completely ghosts Yohan and avoids him everywhere even though Yohan makes an effort to try to talk to him about it. Yohan ends up cornering him one day but they end up just having a fight because Yohan's feelings are so hurt. Semin tries to erase Yohan from his life, even deleting his blog, out of humiliation and makes an appointment to meet with his advisor to apply for a leave of absence saying he needs time off of school to work and make money. Yohan finds out about the appointment and makes an appointment at the same time so they will run into each other. They meet there and end up having a heart to heart and confessing to each other and becoming a couple. It ends kind of abruptly, which the author acknowledged in the authors notes, but that's the basic jist. I'm sure I've missed a few details but overall that's what happened in the 1st series.
