the novel's story is slightly diff. from live action story. but both is good. u will see jealous uke more in live action (ugh it was so good). and xia liu yi aura farms so hard in front of his (future) husband and protects him from other gangsters by beating them up. he's the definition of "touch him and i'll kill you". salute to this GENERATIONAL BOTTOM!!

spoilers (for novel): they get married when they're 39 & 42. and they also switch ;) →that chapter was sooo funny like T_T. so all the boss's subordinates, they know he's in relationship w he chu san, but they don't know who's top and who's bottom and bc he's all gangster and rough and handsome, and he chu san is on the pretty side of male beauty, they all think that xia liu yi is the top. little do they know he's a needy whiney bottom in bed. only one of his subordinates gets out he's a bottom and even she finds it out late. so in the chapter he asked his trustworthy subordinates (one woman who's in relationship w a woman, and one man who's in relationship w a man (who used to be a transwoman before but detransitioned bc he was forced to become a woman by his former boss)) so xia liu yi asked "do you switch with your partners?" and the woman says, "well im a lesbian, and my gf likes to do me too and i ofcourse let her. it's common. we both switch." and the man says, "well, yes, he likes to feel it that was too sometimes, so i have let him". and then they ask "why?does he chu san wants to top you and you refuse? do you want to top him and he refuses?" and then xia liu yi is frustrated bc in reality it was, "he chu san wants to bottom but i refuse!" lmao, xia liu yi my FAV BOTTOM! he's BOTTOM AND PROUD. he ride that dick like a carnival hell yeah!! man he was actually so down bad horrendous by the end of the novel, he wanted to have sex all the time w he chu san. they were having SEX NASTY STYLE one time in the hospital FOR FUCKS SAKE calm tf down T_T.

OH I LOCKED IN!! nothing gets me more excited than this trope AGHH.
if u want to know more and r ok w spoilers i can tell u more abt this novel and story it's so yummy and delicious and so my flavour of story!! they're slow burn and xia liu yi even has to get over some self inflicted denial of sexual desires (in a sense that he always felt ashamed of having sexual desires and didnt act on it and even hit himself for liking a man he should respect – ie. he had a crush on the man who saved him and his sister who was in mafi himself) and he chu san is so patient w him, and he's a service top in all its realness. he's patient and calm and slow and soft with xia liu yi and treats him delicately, and he doesn't even engage in any rough sex with him. he preps him always, cleans him up afterwards, and showers him w love w/o wanting anything in return. (he chusan thinks that he stepped over and demanded love from xia liu yi and xia liu yi always entertained him w love anyway so he also thinks that it's too much for him to want xia liu yi to treat him as his "#1 only lover and someone more imp. than anyone else", like, he's ok even if xia liu yi treats him normally and as long as he loves him it's fine, but he can't help wanting more, he loves xia liu yi so much. yearnermaxxed.) BUT but but, what do u know? xia liu yi comes around treating he chusan as his #1 and was even unconsciously treating him as his #1 and had a soft spot for him since the start. he was only not being close to him bc he was so afraid he chusan would get hurt since he chusan is not from mafia/gangster background so he always wanted to keep him safe and that was his first priority always.

so alot happens like, the story is so action packed. so basically he chusan wants xia liu yi to go legitimate and leave gang. but it's not that easy as the underworld is connected + xly is from a gang which is quite powerful. also, xly wants to avenge the death of his sister and his brother in law (who was the mafia who saved them). as he had affection for his sister and also respected the mafia who saved them, + some residual feelings (altho the feelings are more towards the respect & duty side rather than love but he chusan wrongly feels it's still unrequited love of xly). this and that happens (long story, many fights, many incidents) and ultimately hcs takes it in his hands to save xly and get him out of gang and also take his revenge (as the people involved in k*lling xly's sis & his brother in law were big mafia and were causing problems to police as well) so hcs makes a masterplan. but doesn't want xly to know abt it, as xly would worry abt him.
and it IS a big stake plan, like, there's a chance hcs will die even. so when xly gets a gist what hcs is doing, he pleads to him, he pleads to him crying and begging him to not go. to not do this. the love confession is so beautiful! like, it's the first time xly actually truly confesses his feelings keeping his shame/ego/avoidant personality aside. he really begs for him to not do all this. he says smth like, "no a'san! please, i dont want revenge, i will never go back to gang. i will go legitimate this time. i dont want anything else, you don't need to do this." and hcs is like, "im doing it bc you'll not feel at peace unless u see the revenge happen. i know of your feelings for azure dragon(the mafia who saved him & his sister). i know u love him." with a monotonous tone, not budging from his resolve and xly literally is so pathetically begging, "no! a'san. i dont like him. i like you. i LOVE YOU a'san.i have only loved you." and it's the most beautiful confessions to me bc it's so raw T_T. xly finally came to terms w the fact that he loves hcs so much he can even let go of the guardian and the first person who was kind to him. he is willing to let go of the dead man whom he respected so much and even fought for to save him, he fought against the whole gang solo with js two knife-blades he had and killed all of them, bc he didn't want the mafia to harm azure dragon. still, still, he realised that hcs matters to him so much more. but hcs didn't budge (we stan a king who's locked in!) and he goes on to execute his high stakes masterplan in which he doesn't even let xly MEET him, and by the end of it, hcs does feel he overestimated himself & his power. there's one time he stabs himself in the stomach TWICE due to some punishment that he had to do in order to gain trust of the enemy gang so that the enemy gang could save him and he can destroy it while getting into contact with the "top most" mafia boss. a d omg, xly's reaction to that, UGHH. he literally loses his mind, he is trembling as he hugged hcs. he can't even do anything bc hcs's assistant who's helping him tells xly to stay away from hcs otherwise enemy gang will have suspicion. xly really is scared for hcs. and by the end of the novel at the last fight, he fights to save hcs but hcs is still taken away...then at last you know what he does? he gives himself to the police, confesses all the crimes the gang did and turns himself in, js so the police could save hcs. hca is literally saved from the freezer and can barely move and xly's heart breaks. he really was crying. hcs can't even speak he was so weak bc of being almost frozen to death, but he knows xly turned himself in and going to jail bc he wanted to save him. and xly gets 20 years in prison!! like that's how many years he gets js bc he wanted to save hcs. he sacrificed himself (actually he didn't even know whether he would be getting jailed or even downright executed or a even brutal punishment) he turned himself in not knowing what would happen to him & was willing to bear the punishment of all the crimes entirety of his gang did by himself. hcs refuses treatment until the doc let's him meet xly, and clg tells him, "let's break up a'san. live a good life a'san. do not wait for me. im not worth waiting for." and my heart sank omg the pain w which xly must've said those words T_T. and a'san can't even say anything bc he is so weak & his throat is dry from being in freezer too long and in treatment.
for 3 years straight, xly refuses to even meet hcs in jail. hcs sends him b'day card every year, and he doesn't reply to him. he sends back all of the letters hcs sends him, unopened. and when his prisonmate (who he knew of from his gang days) asks why he does so, xly says it's bc if he gave hcs even a little bit of hope, even if it's false, he would clingy to it and never move on. he wants hcs to be happy. to not wait for him bc it's not worth it. he feels he only gave pain to hcs and is not worthy.
but after 3 years, xly's subordinate tells him (while he visits him in jail) that hcs is engaged, and is gonna get married soon. and xly's heart sinks but he can't even say anything. then that subordinate says, hcs wants to meet you, to tell this to you. please meet him and wish him well atleast once. so xly agrees, and when he meets hcs after 4 yrs(or was it 6 years? i dont remember) he sees hcs looks handsome, he looks mature but beneath it there's still some features that remind him of how hcs was when he was younger. this time hcs gives him a bday card that's not handwritten but is a readymade card from a shop, he shows him the picture of his fiance and it's a pic of her kissing hcs's cheek. hcs says he's gonna move to america as his fiances dad's company is there and he has started working for him, so he's not gonna be in hongkong from now on and will only visit once a year. xly stays composed and says "okay, wish you well. she's pretty." but in his heart, it is hurting so much. his heart is sinking. then when hcs is getting up to leave, he stops his hands on the table and stands up, his handcuffs making a "clank" sound on the table and he asks, "that fiance, she's fake right?" and hcs says, "why would i lie about marriage? im not young anymore, mr. xia" and goes on to open the visit cell door to leave, but xly moves forward, and slams that door shut, pressing hcs against the door. he kisses him (AGHH this scene was so good!) so passionately & even bites his lips & hcs is left breathless, and xly he really asks, w anger and desperation in his eyes, "she's FAKE, RIGHT?" and hcs really answers this time, "ofc she is, why do u not meet me? what right do u have to break up w me, i hate you xia liu yi, i hate you so much. someone said u have achieved inner peace by letting me go, and that i should find it too. WHAT BULLSHIT INNER PEACE! im not gonna leave you ever. once you're out, im gonna keep you chained in my house until you're 80 years old, a 100 years old. im gonna keep you with me even after we both die!"
and after that they start meeting monthly again, and they kiss every visit. once it got so heated the cop from outside coughed to tell them not to do it there as there's cctv.
and then some fire breaks out in jail and xly saved the cops+prisoners, and so his sentence is reduced. after 11(or 13?) years in prison, he's finally out when he's 42. hcs comes to pick him up and directly drives him to the wedding venue where all of xly's subordinates & hcs's family & friends are waiting. they get married, and hcs's father (who previously was against hcs and xly relationship) is the one who commemorates the wedding. then the father says, "the husbands may kiss! everyone under 10, close your eyes" and xly grabs hcs by his neck and kisses him so so passionately that the father says, "okay, do the rest in your room!"
HAHA. happy ending + there are some cute extra chapters as "life of husbands"
xly becomes a househusband and opens a fruit shop to sell durians and pineapples while hcs is a finance investment banker in big form and is v rich now haha. he even buys a Ferrari for xly but he says he doesn't need it, he is househusband now and rides bikes mostly.
