I could imagine that it really depends on what has made someone upset and what their love language is. For example the sadness of being alone or like abandoned is vastly different from the sadness of like your mom passing away. And a person that shows love through physical touch is probably more open to sex in comparison to someone who shows love through words. Sex is also usually seen as like the ultimate act of love (when in a relationship) and seeking such comfort when sad could make sense? I have no idea though just a hypothesis.

It depends. I have done it several times as a way to feel close to the person that I consider my shelter and makes me feel protected. Sometimes words don't help but knowing that they are able to accept you and care for you in an intimate manner in a broken state is an ultimate proof of "need help to forget(?), let me help you" in a way. "Let me pamper you because I know you are going through a hard time, Let me take your mind away however I can" because intimacy is seen as the most precious union. But... as I say it depends on the person and the situation you are going through. I always communicate with my partner and knows what works, and if it works in occasions, therapy taught us that may be a way to coupe. And that takes me to say that this dont work on all people. For example it works for me the majority of the time, but not for my partner when life gets hard.

If someone's just felt like the other person "magically appears" like a beacon of hope whenever they're in deep trouble (like Vanessa's just thought) then of course. It's called "realizing you're in love".
Otherwise (if it's not with someone you love and whom you feel you can absolutely rely on) then it's a cheap, counterproductive way of cheering oneself up.

It's one kind of coping mechanism. It's not really deemed as healthy in psychology but yeah it's real

It differs from person to person... It's a form of coping mechanism for some people bc it could feel like an escape,... Like drugs is for others, or alcohol or cigarettes

i also always thought why couples in movies or in manhwas kiss or even have sex when they’re sad when i was single but after getting in a relationship i surprisingly find myself feeling consoled by the act of affection and even seeking it later. i dont necessarily think its an issue, it’s just a love language. but having someone to hold you when you’re in your lowest is such a blessing . I like to see it as something way deeper than just a kiss or a sex, more like a sign that they genuinely want/love each other

Sex can be like adrenaline, a temporary release from stress. But like alcohol, once the high wears off, your problems are still waiting for you.
