I think she was worried he was being brainwashed too and if that was the case it would tell ivonne that penelope knows her identity. Then ivonne would have an advantage in some way (just killing penelope since ivonne assumed she was still stupid in this life) before penelope sorted out her own plan. me thinks.
I dunno if I can fully articulate my idea here, and it is thoughtfully realized in some ways, but in many others, this story feels like aestheticized melancholy and gratuitous angst. It's glossy, but there are a lot of moments that felt shallow or empty to me, or explained weakly post hoc. It's not my favorite chepali writing.
