and green spirit kinda reminds me of weed but anyway i think that the author's referring to "acceptance" since green is the color of acceptance and communication. so the title "smells like green spirit" stands for teens who are trying to find their place in the world.

I've heard of a song called "Smells Like Teen Spirit," so the title was most likely based off of it. Green can mean "(of a plant or fruit) young or ripe." The title could be referring to the troubles of youth that are dealt with in the comic.

Holy floop, I finally got around to reading the manga and it's hella good. I still haven't finished it and sorry for the fact that I'm jumping on this train kind of late but I'm super excited and pumped to talk about it for some reason. (May be the 3 cups of coffee speaking) So in the words of Kurt Cobain, "Smells Like Teen Spirit is a song about teenage freedom and revolution and is as non-conforming as the lyrics themselves." In my opinion it's a novel about kid's figuring themselves out and trying to accept their non-conforming queer/trans selves. I don't think they themselves (Kirino and Mishima) fully understand what is going on or who they are but when they are with each other they are free and true to who they are. Then pops up Yumeno who is hiding who he is by conforming to what society says is the norm and picking on Mishima to further hide his shame and true colours. Thanks (but no thanks) to Mr.Creepy teacher we finally get to see his true colours and self. I think that it's really about youth just figuring themselves. Also when I thought of the colour green I automatically thought of jealousy which s a recurring theme within the manga. Kirino was jealous of Mishima for looking girly and cute. Yumeno seemed to be jealous of Kirino for being close to Mishima. The old grannies gossiping were jealous of Mishima and his mom because their husbands were saying how hot they were compared to them. When I looked at the meaning of colours in Japan, youth coincides with green which kind of ties together with the Nirvana song. Also the manga talks about a lot of characters in their youth for instance Mishima's mom being in love at age 15 and having a child at age 20. Kirino's mom suffering from infertility and trying to have a baby even when she was young. Mr.Creepo Teacho falling in love with Yato from Noragami when he was young. So altogether I think that the title and the manga are just kind of hinting at kid's opening up their Pandora's box and being true to who they are, no matter what society says.
Non of y'all should feel the need to read that essay. It was powered by too much coffee and the need to talk about such an amazing manga. I just had a lot of fun reading into the manga and talking about it and I basically said the exact thing that all of you guys said.
Yaoi manga where the uke is mother like (eg. Elegant, caring) if they ARE a mother, that's fine and if they're not, then it's okay too. I prefer if the seme is a person of power (just overall, the dominant one in the relationship. I don't want the ones the seme is a brat that has to be taken care of by the uke) SORRY IF TOO SPECIFIC, recommendations are highly appreciated regardless of the accuracy of it.
