Hey, so I haven't read that, so it's fuck him for that; but I'm just talking from THIS read. And you can't deny that in this manhwa he wasn't done dirty. It's fuck him cause I AM aware he's still trash from this book, like attempting to take advantage of our MC, but two things can be true: he got his dude stolen even though they were together first, so that's why it's justice for him. And please don't compare him to the literal murderer and rapist; that's rude (⌒▽⌒)

tbh people glaze fictional characters all the time, from mass killers to superheroes, its all in the name of fiction and to me at least, I see a pretty big disconnect from reality, like thats the point...most of the time.
my real concern is when you have cases of actual criminals. women will literally petition for their sentence to be reduced, just because they are conventionally attractive.

Let me get something straight, I did not praise him. I said Justice for him, but nowhere did I praise him. That is not the same thing. Please do not conflate them.
Secondly, I will admit I forgot about Kyle, but that's the issue: I forgot about him; he doesn't really hold any weight in the book other than being Ilay's brother, but I guess he's in terms of likeable characters, he should absolutely be on there, so I apologise for that. The book has 1 semi-charming character.

For me, I have no problem reading problematic media, but I find that in a lot of it, people will glaze over said problematic character when they are assigned the role of MC or ML. There is nothing wrong with building a story where a character is bad, awful, inhumane. But we ned to touch reality: IF ILAY WAS NOT THE ML, WOULD HE NOT BE HATED?. WOULD HE NOT BE DESPISED? If the author had really decided that Xinlu was our true ML from the start and actually decided to develop their relationship properly, I doubt many people who are so desperately waiting for the chapter in which Ilay assaults the MC again would be so desired, and that's the problem for me. There is no part of this manhwa that aims to give us a real reason as to why they are so perfect for each other than "If I had thought with my head,d I would have killed you 10 times" HOW IS THAT ROMANTIC OMG, WHY SHOULD I ROOT FOR THAT???!! The media is problematic, but it doesn't even try to be good problematic media; it's really just painful to read.

Genuinely, why would he let him speak when that's never been in character for him? The same guy whose advice to the MC in the beginning was just basically, in retrospect, "corner him and make him yours if you want him that bad" That guy. Why do they think he would magically change his approach to love when all his life he's never had to truly face tough consequences for his actions because he knows he would always, somehow, someway be bailed and forgiven? That guy???!!! Take a moment and listen??! HIM?!!!? Someone who has never been forced to do so because he was born, as the book says it, with a diamond spoon and has never put himself in a situation where he would have to listen to another side, because he's always gotten whatever he wanted without even having to think and it's always been his side or no side??? HIM!!???

the problem is, you are conflating dark romance with dark stories in general.
you are setting up wrong expectations and then complaining about it when it falls short. Dark romance in its nature cant have narrative integrity, otherwise it wont end "happy", meaningful consequences? forget that lol.
for example, killing stalking isnt a romance, they do not end up together all lovey dovey like nothing ever happened, instead it explores actual dark themes and it shows real consequences.

dark romances romanticizes, so ofc there are readers who are going to care about the MC and ML, thats part of the point, the story wants you to become invested in their relationship working out.

when im not reading peak, I like turning my brain off and enjoying the absurdity of this type of fiction.

Im a strong believer in the separation of fiction from reality, the only time when i would be concerned about the real implications of the fiction someone enjoys is when there is a consistent concerning pattern. like men who only enjoy porn that is extremely violent towards women or women who only enjoy reading about queer characters when there is rape.

That's the point. If anyone has problem or their beliefs are not aligining with the story they are reading, the best thing to do is stop reading that's it. What's the point in fighting. While reading things of this genre it is very important to keep in mind the difference between the reality and fiction. There is no point in fighting this is wrong or this is right. Cuz what's the point of reading this story, if you are going to fight for the thing which already happened. The best thing to do is accept. Ofc criticizing is an open forum but in a story like pension there is no way this can take a good turn. Thats why it's better to accept it and just move on or maybe don't read

Don't read the story, I'm not trying to be read when I said that. The whole story is problematic if you think from every angle not just from Ilay's part only. Ilay is just the half portion of the story which ppl think is problematic. The whole story has no point to root for it's just that it's good enough to read. Ofc you might think that the things which is done is morally wrong in the story but that doesn't mean we have to support it. Even if you are rooting for a story or a character which is a bad person doesn't mean you support. It's audience is reading for their enjoyment. Not every story has to be taken this seriously and I will assume that everyone reading this story is over 15 or 16 so they have the ability to know which is right wrong. And waiting for the story's next plot or episode doesn't mean you are supporting it. And again 'omg Ilay let him speak' I bet they know he will never change they are just writing their frustration. As long as someone knows the difference between reality and fiction it's good. And for genre of dark romance this is very peaceful tbh. The manhwa made Ilay look like a person who has changed but the novel doesn't do justice any of the character here in this story. The story was made to be DARK ROMANCE typa shit hell genre. So the story would like shit. And the ppl who read this shit will also be invested in it. What I mean to say is that if you do not like it or it is not matching with your beliefs or moral just drop it bro it is very easy. Trust me I do that

I really am not conflating anything. As I said in my first post, they do not have chemistry, and I feel like if you are going to write a story with deep, heavily flawed characters but have the romance included, then there needs to be something to ROOT FOR. I do not feel like, in the time that I read this, THERE WAS NOT ANYTHING THAT MADE ME ROOT FOR THEM DESPITE THE FLAWS.

Let me use, for example, the manhwa Die In My Arms; our uke is obviously a stalker with psychopathic tendencies and typically for me that should turn me off and yet I stick around because the author does a good job in setting up the fact that the crazy is mutual. The Uke, for the most part, is infatuated, to the point of even attempting to murder our MC in his sleep, and the MC is a deeply flawed man who, despite his many attempts to hide it, is just as madly in love and also just as crazy. And although they are both trash, in their respective areas, I find myself rooting for them and enjoying the plot because the author DOES NOT FORGET THE ROMANCE ASPECT OF THE DARK "ROMANCE"


Where is the romance here? Where are the scenes that make me go, "You know what? Maybe I do need them to get together."

My main gripe with this novel is that IT DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO DO WHAT IT IS TRYING TO WELL. Even remotely. If the author wanted a dark book, then let's do that; make a dark book, don't have their relationship be heavily romanticised, don't have our MC blush every nanosecond when the ML is close. Don't let the MC sit there and think, "Why can't I hate you?", while gripping his shirt Naruto style. If the author wants to write a dark book, let it be dark.

"The story wants you to become invested in their relationship working out." I KNOW, I KNOWW AND THIS IS THE EXACT PROBLEM. THIS IS A DARK ROMANCE, SO WHERE IS THE ROMANCE? That's the aspect that differentiates it from being just another dark book, so where is it? I read over 100 chapters with this exact mindset when, if you check in the comments, I was already tired from the jump but wanted to see what this would bring. I came at it from an enemies-to-lovers standpoint, slow burn; however, I could bring life into this dead story, and it was all just so tiring to read. 100 chapters, and the author couldn't write me a single solid scene to hold steadfast and strong for them is just criminal. So you want me to read all this with no great chemistry and then, at the end, boom, he says sorry, boom, happy ending. I should be waiting till the end to get a smidge of what should come naturally in a package. For me, I can't back this statement because, for me, it's saying like I should be putting bets on a stock that has shown no evidence of sales; how can I invest in something I haven't seen??

This was supposed to be a critique of what I read, and from what I saw, he IS a rapist; their chemistry does suck, and there were no characters that made me go, "Well, I'll finish the book for them". I do intend to drop this lmaoo. Don't let my posting fool you. I am not trying to tie in the real world or reality to really on this story; I am just stating facts. I understand that people are trying to vent out their frustrations, but everything I have said, I have used the novel itself to back myself up. They can be frustrated, but saying stuff like "he should just talk it out", aka communicate, when YOU'RE saying the book is supposed to be dark and trash and "has no point to root for" is a little, in itself, oxymoronic because the book has proved time and time again that he is indeed trash. A difference between "why can't he communicate?" and "damn, he can never communicate" is the self-aware aspect. They want him to be something that he cannot be and therefore are misunderstanding the book and the character. That's my issue, and that's what I addressed.

My main problem is that the book is not well written, objectively, no matter if you think, "oh, this is dark romance; this is normal for the genre," which I GUESS, but it doesn't change the fact that I think the book is just ass. The world building i guess, is okay, but I felt many things were lacking; for example, they kept bringing up the fact that the MC's brother's luck is from the MC and there's a red thread and whatever, but to me it just felt like a cop out to make the MC a little bit more interest I will give credit that the author does build on that very early on in the chapters when we see the MC's brother walk out and he says Time to get my own luck but I would have prefered tp see the luck actually happen when their together, just seems like the authour wrote that line like the luck came from proximity which is why the brother left and then we see the boat scene where the gun blows up in Ilay's had and so then I am left questioning is it proximity or not. But then there's the red thread that he cut; it must be that, which is okay, fair enough, but if we're gonna do that route, then show me, or even tell me, that the brother is struggling now. If they cover that in the chapters that I didn't read, then fair enough. It tries to build a supernatural route without even fully leaning into it; oh, the luck only works for one person; oh, he cut the red string, and now it's attached to Ilay, but it just doesn't feel good enough. It reads like those scenes in manhwa where they have a dream of a fruit, and it's a reference to a baby coming, but the entire time the story was never supernatural, and it was just supposed to be a cute moment signifying a mother's instinct or whatever.


The characters leave me a lot to be desired. I don't think there has been any character that has an arc that has made me fully root for them. MC and his brother's relationship was a lot of tell, not show. Ilay... MC's uncle I liked then; they ruined but fair on him for giving MC the fake passport, but instead of building off that, it just seemed to me that he just kinda gets dropped and forgotten till useful again and then dropped again. Then there's Xinlu who, well, we know how I feel about the asshole.

The romance aspect I have also covered in another one of my posts: this is supposed to be a DARK ROMANCE book, and yet the romance- the aspect that makes me root for them is non-existent, really. I am not asking for this to be fluff, but if I picked up a book that was supposed to be horror mystery and everything was sunshine and rainbows from start to finish, and the author had given really bad hints that tried to remind the readers that it was, in fact, a horror by throwing in, for example, 'a person in a white sheet to be a ghost,' you too would be disappointed in the execution of said book. The romance aspect is lacklustre. I know just because it is a dark romance doesn't mean the weight of both should be equal, sure, but it also doesn't mean the weight of one should be essentially none too. If the author had just decided that it would be a dark book with characters that happen to be gay, for example, killing stalking, I could at least respect it for what it is. This is not that.

And that's why I am disappointed in all of this
