Tbh, I think there's was a some kind of development, just Jaekyung didn't really realize. Yes, there was more of toxic things, we all know that. But, for example, when Jaekyung was drunk, we all saw, that's he's capable of being considerate partner (yes, I also know, that being drunk=/= your true self, but people tend to be more honest while being drunk). Jeakyung reaction to Dan's leaving also put some influence on him, he just can't say why yet. So, for me, there was a slow burn, it's was just so small and so twisted and toxic, that you can barely notice. That's just my opinion, may be wrong.
