In his case, it's actually just an instinctive sound he made when he bumps into something/someone. But you're not exactly wrong either, 'ai ya' can be used for many things:)

Yeah, 'ai ya' can be used that way too xD I wouldn't really call it hokkien but many different Chinese from different dialect groups use it too so I guess you could see it as a part of the dialect. Singapore language, we all understand the unique part of it xD
