I just really love that we have a story here about two people who are mature enough to realize that they have shortcomings and flaws and need each other and actually communicate that. So often the Trope is that you have a broken character and the perfect angel to fix them, when in actuality these two both have so many problems and need to help each other. It's very real and very rewarding.
This is a beautiful amount of redemption required of a troubled, toxic main character. Let us not forget his opinions publicly of gay people as early as the first two chapters of the story. I really, truly appreciate that the author is making him put in the work and is not going to give him anything after all the s*** he has done. A refreshing turn of the story.
I'm ready for the pain because the author has now teased that the story could get way darker multiple times, but has pulled the punch at the last moment, and you just know that means we're in for some truly dark times ahead. I wouldn't be shocked if we get like a gruesome murder of our beloved protagonist in front of his beloved by his IRL friend. Something tells me this is going to be one of those stories that ends sad and depressing. There's just no way.
I need this to be a slow, painful process dragged out over a dozen chapters at least as He makes himself look like an absolute idiot for Garam. It would be a nice change of pace for a story (and "relationship") that started off burning really hot and really bright, and I think it would do good for both of them to have this be a slow process of realization.
Feel like this is Garam putting him to the test, seeing how much this is just driven by his horniness and how much he actually is interested in Garam's attention.

I don't know where to begin or what to say. If you stopped reading this story when they are together in the small house set, it would be a slightly underridden but fulfilling story about pushing through adversity and finding love in a hard time. The last third of this story though feels like one of the worst setup and most contrived ways of putting so many characters through the wringer. When the confession happened halfway through the story I knew that there would be some kind of separation before they ultimately got back together, but the fact that it had to turn into Ed and McQueen screaming each other and saying awful things to each other and breaking up in a terrible way and then a full year goes by and it has to get raped by his childhood pseudo brother and all of this messiness...
Look, the story starts off in a fine enough place. You have a very attractive pornographic film producer who clearly has aspirations as an artsy film director, and you have the naive closeted bisexual man who falls in love with the enigmatic man.
That's all good and well and fine. But you could tell the story wanted to be something more grounded and darker and quote unquote real. The mafia tie-in felt heavy-handed, the scenario behind the debt was sort of hand waved away in a manner that made very little sense, and the whole relationship with the kind of brother felt so unnecessary and forced.
I was laughing at times when the story started tying in this random New York Post journalist that was openly talking about masturbating to this up and coming performer, like that was honestly very funny. The way the story felt like it tied in strongly to the US and New York and political and social culture was a big yes.
The way pornography and sex work was portrayed as this some kind of evil and immoral thing kind of rub me the wrong way, although I think the point was to point out the predatory practices in the business. The weird documentary about the rapist too was just so bizarre and unexplained.
All I know it feels like I read a full story that ended up turning into a third of a full story. If they had changed the ending and instead inserted about 10 chapters of some fluff or some lighter and less angsty way of dealing with the realities of being a pornographic actor this would feel like a very complete and well-rounded story.
If This Were 30 chapters longer and had actually gone into the depths of understanding all of these Side characters and their machinations, or had really gone into Ed and McQueen rebuilding their relationship? Then I could have seen the story being a bit better.
As it is, this is one of those stories where I almost regret reading it just for how disappointed I feel about How It Ends. The only thing worse than a story that never gets off the ground is one that just completely implodes on the landing.
