Am I tripping, or is this just harassment and sexual assault dressed up as romance? I genuinely don't understand the writing choice here. The exact same personalities, chemistry, and relationship dynamic could exist between two consenting adults, and the story would lose... what, exactly
No you’re not mistaken. Once you turn your brain on (I don’t mean this as an insult) you realize a lot of the “cute” stories are actually disgusting. It’s the same thing as sitcoms painting horrible and abusive characters as lovable and silly by using bright colors and slapping a laugh track over it. This is basically the Yaoi equivalent to that phenomenon.
I think it’s less about me “shutting off my brain” and more that I was conditioned to see it as okay. A lot of these stories will show something genuinely horrendous, but then the characters act sweet afterward or the story frames it as romantic, so you start to accept that this is how it’s supposed to go. The presentation makes you overlook how messed up the actual situation is. I know this is just a comment section, but I felt like I needed to say this because of everyone’s replies so far. This has honestly been very eye-opening.
Just because you make a dark-skinned character, say he's "actually tan" because he's a plushie, or claim he's "not even a person" doesn't automatically make the racial implications disappear. I can't be the only one who finds this uncomfortable. People are already calling it an unfortunate coincidence, but it's hard to ignore that the author chose for a monkey plushie ML to become a large, dark-skinned man with noticeably big ears and a large penis. There were countless other design choices that could've been made for this plot, which is why so many people are questioning it.
I get that characters are supposed to be flawed, and in situations like this, people are going to say nasty, hurtful things. That's a realistic reaction on both sides. What isn't debatable, though, is that what happened was sexual assault. I don't think I'll ever understand why authors so often downplay the effects of sexual assault. This entire chapter would have been just as compelling and emotionally impactful without it. The SA felt completely unnecessary and didn't add any meaningful substance to the story.

I know this is random, but I really want their baby girl to have a nice mix of both of their genetics and personalities. Like, I want her to get the best of both of them, but I can’t lie, I’d love if she looked mostly like Taesun idk is that weird to say-
