I'm hooked bit I'm more hooked about the history background of this Story. Does anyone know? It would be interesting of this would be set in the Future bc they're thinking of the possiblity of an "Imperial China" that fights against South Korea

It is actually set in an alternate, dystopian near-future where China has rebranded as an aggressive "Imperial" superpower, putting South Korea on the constant brink of war and total absorption. Because of that massive military threat, society has become highly authoritarian, and the prison is basically a brutal containment zone used to control the population under the guise of "national security." That whole survival-driven paranoia is why the environment is so harsh and why the stakes are so high for the characters!
