Overall, I think it's a pretty neat story in terms of a character study. While I am weirded out by the underage stuff, I appreciate that none of the it seems to be actively excused by the surrounding characters, and in fact they judge it pretty clearly. I think it's cool that they can accept the fact that they want these two to be happy and for any illegal tangoing to be criticzed by the people around them to the extent they are aware of it. Honestly, character-wise, I'd probably judge Haruko most harshly for being a pretty neglectful mother to Haru, but she's simply a flawed human and I can respect that. Also, hooray for the fact that Ren is legal in American standards now?
I would say while you have a fair interpretation of my comment, it doesn't match my intent when I left it half a year ago. I would explain my reasoning of saying the family and friend members don't 'actively excuse' Haru's perverted actions by meaning they don't say anything along the lines of 'he's not doing anything wrong' or 'it's not his fault.' They recognize that, but can't significantly change the outcome of Haru and Ren's relationship without splitting the two either by calling Haru's negligent mother or the police. Considering that I doubt anyone of the surrounding characters would want to take such actions after realizing the twos codependency, I would argue they passively excuse it by assuming the stance of 'there's nothing they can do to stop it (without tearing the two apart by force).' At the end of the day, I do agree that they excuse Haru's actions, but because they still take the time to call him out for them, I think they play a decent role as trying to temper the situation as best as they can without destroying their relationships. :)
makes me wonder if the animal portions give them different lifespans/aging rates
Ohh that's interesting to think about
