Yes and this doesn't look like grooming at all to me because they didn't have anything weird going on as kids, it a wasn't until after they were both adults that the pilot dude got back and realized he had fallen for the mc. Maybe I missed something in the backstory chapters but to me this didn't look like a more mature person grooming a child to be their partner later on, it happened after he got back.
