Its so obvious that he's not the one killing her and from his perspective he's lost her multiple times but doesn't know how to show affection. He's doing a bad job at it though. You guys taking what she thinks at face value is wrong though. You can see him even in the first death be desperate and frantic about her dying.
It's literally my least favorite trope in existence. The idea of a parent and child fighting over the attention of one person especially that childs parent is icky and gives emotional incest vibes to me. I do not care for it. It ruined the whole fucking story for me
