the spell to counter the gate spell was a fertility spell, I interpret it as a death curse vs life spell situation. It doesn't kill him though because the fertility spell worked and got him pregnant, the baby is like an inhibitor for the effect of the life-death spell combo meaning he was supposed to die but didn't because the fetus gave him +1000 shield
