It's so fascinating how they are all a victim of circumstances. I'd really want to read Masakado's backstory even tho the story seems to point at him as a villain, there are subtle hints that he's not. At the beginning of the story, we're shown flashbacks of how Kazushige became a vampire and it shows Masakado being hungry which may mean that he was either trying to avoid drinking human blood or wasn't able to get human blood due to capability reasons. The latter seems to be unlikely because vampires are vampires and it was the 19th century, who among the lower class would have locked doors? Since fasting seem to derange vampires, Masakado turning Shige may have been an honest mistake, an accident. And we saw how easy it was that he ripped that greasy old man's neck that was trying to SA the kid. So, highly unlikely. Moreover, the kid did say at the ending that Masakado's a contradictory being or something because his actions may easily be interpreted as malicious and such. He wasn't jealous nor harboring malicious intents towards Kazushige. He was more likely feeling guilt over Shige's pain over the centuries that he's been watching that he wanted him to have a companion he to satiate his loneliness just like how a father would want to protect their child. Therefore, the true villain in this story, I believe, is the circumstances they were forced to go through.
