Why why why. I was finding guwon adorable, and I feel kind of sick thinking I did. Double the regret, I imagine, for MC, since he fell for ML before remembering what actually happened. This is crazy development. Wow. SPOILER (Doctor Lim got killed just like that; when I could barely recover from the kid’s father being executed) (then soon finds out that mc’s father got killed by ML too). It’s one thing after another. I can’t fathom the trauma of having the people you’re desperate to protect, killed in front of your eyes by the person you believe would be able to help you in a desperate situation… lo and behold, ML is that person who gives people that trauma. Wth :(
I dropped one of the manhwas I was reading here because I find I couldn’t overlook that MC sexually assaulted ML and made him a sex slave. (I tried to overlook for a while, but it didn’t work for me, and I couldn’t get myself invested into their future. I felt ML deserved better, and MC too, but probably not with each other after what had happened)
I opened a topic, sharing that specific sentiment of my experience, not even saying that MC was not a complex character — because MC does have a complex and sad background.
One of the replies wanted clarification because the manhwa also caught their eye. It was a respectful exchange.
Another reply went for insult. Apparently WTF this Samantha (me) just doesn’t like complex MC or omega. Proceeds to give me the list of things about MC I already know - cause it’s pretty obvious from the beginning of the story MC wasn’t exactly from a clean background (mafia, debt collector, drugs dealer, mobster, etc) - perhaps thinking the list should justify MC’s actions toward ML at his lowest. ML was innocent in all this (his parents had debt left it on him) and I really felt for ML so as I was reading I couldn’t read anymore and had to stop. I was clear on that in the topic. I honestly didn’t want him to end up with MC. (I have nothing against those who may be okay with them ending up together though - I was just of different opinion)
Anyway, from this experience, I think that people should know it’s okay to exercise discernment for yourself as you read. It’s okay to respectfully share your experience. It’s okay to stop engaging with a work if it causes extreme discomfort.
If you also had my experience where an unreasonable stranger tried to make you feel bad about dropping a manhwa because of the sensitive themes or the characterization wasn’t for you, then know that there’s nothing wrong with that.
Peace out
Can relate...
Sometimes it feels like I've insulted their mother and their cow just by giving my opinion on a series. Maybe chill? It's just a book, you know...
Anyway at this point I've pretty much stopped reading manhwas because so many of the new ones (romance genre) end up toxic and that's a pain to read. I guess I wouldn't mind it as much the toxicness was a result of what happens in the story- but usually it's shown through a flashback and you're supposed to feel compassion with a character that has been nothing but a red flag since the begining? If someone assaulted me then proceeded to explain their sad life story I sure as heck would NOT feel compassion, and I don't see why that would work in a story...
As one of the older users on this website, I must confess the young ones are worrying me. Do they act like that because it's a story or would they find it romantic and exciting irl too? I fear for some the lines have blurred.
Felt like I insulted their mom and cow, indeed.
Any reader should be allowed to walk away from a work that has sensitive themes, without being insulted. It’s paramount to one’s own well-being.
That person in the replies did not have that discernment whatsoever, unfortunately.
Anyway thank you for sharing your thoughts too. Sorry you experienced something similar as well.
I need more development. This has the potential to develop in all kind of directions, why stop there?
