Someone in the comments said that this arc will teach Mori what a father is and how Ryder is more of a father to him….I don’t think so…
Ryder, Miria and the others already know about the concept of different familial names but the group of them ended up being mum anyway. The point of the story is how the role of “mom” is defined as one of care, love and something that brought humans together. Ryder cannot be Mori’s father because they can’t be tied to human gender roles and human sexes. Just because Ryder’s actions are “masculine” doesn’t mean there will be a connection to the role “dad”.
Ryder will always be Mori’s mum because they are a guardian that has unconditional affection and kindness towards him. To them, that is what a mum is.
This is so long but I really had a point to make…
Completely agree. I’d like to add on that this story clearly focuses on the found family troupe, which already doesn’t follow that conventional norms of what a “family” is. Multiple parental figures could exist at once, and therefore multiple “mama”s. I just think that this story clearly focuses of the idea of family as community rather than finding specific people to fill in the role of papa, mama, brother, sister, etc.
