Found a website that has up to like chapter 12. The king was neglected by his parents so he doesn’t know how to behave towards his own kids. So it make sense he wasn’t really aware because he doesn’t know how parents are supposed to be towards kids. He just assumed they were okay because they were happy when they saw him.
