The word you're looking for is "obsessed." And yes, they certainly need to communicate more, especially since Riftan's apparebt obsession is preventing Maxi to groe further as a person. And you can tell that Ruftan thinks of Maxi as a frail, dainty, and helpless princess (which she's trying to grow out of being).

Maxi put herself in that box. Even now when she's expecting to a strong character she's weak, she expects everyone feels and pov except her husband. Who she herself has treated her better than anyone ever has. Not saying he not obsessed but Maxi sets blurred boundaries and cry with trauma. Riftan isn't blaming all his choices on trauma. I agree with the sister Maxi thoughts and feels are going to be the end of their relationship before riftan obsession would.

So, everything you just said was completely incorrect. I don't agree with this at all, mainly because it feels like you're treating Maxi's trauma and Riftan's behavior as two completely separate issues when the story repeatedly shows they're connected. Maxi didn't "put herself in that box." Her father spent years convincing her she was weak, useless, and incapable of doing anything on her own. The problem is that whenever Maxi tries to climb out of that box and become more independent, Riftan is almost always the one reinforcing those insecurities. How many arguments have they had all because Maxi wants to learn magic, help people, go somewhere on her own/stand as equals with Riftan, or generally make decisions for herself? A LARGE chunk of their conflict comes from Riftan refusing to see her as competent and failing to trust her capabilities.

And I'm honestly confused by the claim that Maxi only considers everyone else's feelings (or just her own feelings?) except Riftan's. Did we read the same story? Half the reason she does anything is because SHE'S WORRIED ABOUT HIM. She followed a noblewoman into a literal war zone because she was terrified for his safety. [MAJOR SPOILERS]

She left for the Mage Tower because she believed it would protect both Riftan and Anatol from facing any potential consequences from beating her father. SHE SPENDS BASICALLY THE ENTIRE FIRST HALF OF BOOK 2 TRYING TO GET THIS ASSHOLE TO TALK TO HER WHILE HE CONTINUOUSLY SHUTS HER OUT, OVER A DECISION THAT WAS MEANT TO FUCKING PROTECT HIM. If anything, Maxi spends TOO MUCH time considering Riftan's feelings and not enough time considering her own.

Also, saying Riftan treated her better than anyone else isn't exactly the defense you think it is, lol. The competition is the Duke of Croyso. Congratulations, he managed to clear the lowest bar imaginable . That doesn't suddenly make all of his behavior healthy. And yes, I absolutely think Riftan's obsession is a FAR bigger threat to their relationship than Maxi's insecurities. Maxi's trauma mostly hurts Maxi. Riftan's trauma hurts everyone around him, ESPECIALLY MAXI. That's the difference. One internalizes their pain, while the other externalizes it. The narrative acknowledges this constantly, which is why so many of their problems stem from Riftan's possessiveness, anger, emotional avoidance, and inability to communicate in a healthy way.

So no, I don't think Maxi's thoughts and feelings are what's going to destroy their relationship. If anything, most of the story is Maxi desperately trying to keep the relationship afloat while Riftan repeatedly sabotages it because he'd rather act on his fears than actually talk to his fucking wife.
