The easiest answer would be that they are dead. In Japan, when you become orphan, the family members adopt you. But if they don't like you, you will be going from relatives to relative without settling.
My guess is that he ran away from the latest relative he was living with, and is living of his parent's heritage. It would explain why he doesn't know how to love alone or decorate his house, because he never had his own space
