i know you probably hear this a dozen times for every adaptation you read, but please read the original novel if you are able (ill gladly provide link if requested). sungkyungs dive into insanity is depicted much more intensely there, and it's much more graphic and gripping. being a psychological, im sure this was a difficult novel to adapt.

im going to preface my read by taking note of the insanely, unintentionally hilarious title (given that none of the characters are black). hopefully it sounds better in context.
The context is that the term 'black' and 'dark' are interchangeable so a better translation would be 'dark history'

how was little taeyoung an "accident"? if you and the girl you're pretending to date while being strictly friends are BOTH gay and clearly don't harbor sny romantic feelings for each other how did she get pregnant?? i feel like there were more reasonable ways to make jiwan a father without that plot hole.
I think they really tried to be a “normal” couple due to both their traumatic pasts. That included trying intercourse too which lead to the accident.

no, this isn’t the best psychological bl i’ve come across, nor is the plot super well developed, but each character is actually very well written. i love a conflict where both sides can be understood, and this is exactly that. but there is no point in ‘siding’ with either party because neither's actions are defendable in any way lmao.
you can feel eunsung’s desperation for hyunwoo’s attention through all of his actions, and the same thing can be said for the latter’s annoyance with his clinginess. both characters stayed consistent from beginning to end, and tbh even that is a rare achievement in today’s world of slop manhwa (and this is anything but slop). the supernatural reincarnation/body double thing leaves much room for reader interpretation, and the ambiguous ending is so fitting for their unclear relationship. i hate that nobody is simply hating on the work for the toxicity aspect instead of theorizing about the body double mystery when that’s the main plot point that differentiates this from any other bl.
onto critiques: the story could’ve been shorter, with a heavier emphasis the supernatural aspect. it starts with a dual murder, and we see the couple (presumably) kill each other again in the end, perhaps hinting that they’re stuck in a loop of violence and toxicity.
also, the sex scenes could’ve been cut shorter and showed the audience more about each character’s inner thoughts, and it would’ve been the perfect opportunity to show eunsung’s dark thoughts and obsession as well as hyunwoo’s fear of him through body language. lots of readers are shitting on the rape. all i have to say to that is if it’s not your cup of tea then don’t read it instead of hating on the story? the trigger warnings are right there and your ass chose to ignore them. on the contrary, the rapey aspect could be played up as a physical manifestation of emotional turmoil between the characters instead of downplayed.
overall it’s a realistic interpretation of what a toxic relationship can look like; dual sided, uncomfortable, and anything but romanticized.
note: the author and artist are different people. the artist has two separate psychological works that are much better than this one. i fully believe that the author was the one holding back the storyline. please do read ‘smoke screen’ and ‘the sea of falling ash’ if you are able.

the ratings for this story wouldn’t be so low if it reached its intended audience.
this isn’t a satisfying or wholesome story, and if you choose to read it despite that, that is 100% on YOU, not the author. frustrating read ≠ bad writing.
yes, duna is a slut. yes, haesol is an insufferable doormat. yes, minho is a gross misogynist and is confirmed to be based off of the author’s ex. none of the evil characters are redeemable in any way, and i don’t believe they are intended to be. arguing about whether minho’s punishment fits the crime is an irrelevant debate, and the same thing can be said for any other argument for or against the morality of the characters depicted in this story because it’s fundamentally a story based off of moral incorrigibility.
now onto why i think this story deserves better.
every character stayed consistent and true to their set personality. there’s a wonderful balance between humor and depravity within each character and in the cast in general. every single person brings something to the table in terms of character dynamics.
minho’s character was never developed, but he was written as a static character. he is dispositioned to be stubborn and mindlessly aggressive. it would, in fact, make even less sense if he suddenly became a good person for the sake of redemption. if you consider how the story starts (ie minho and duna’s relationship, duna’s sadistic tendencies), it makes total sense for the plotline to go where it did. it’s not a happy disney storyline but it’s definitely realistic with every character still having their struggles and sociopathic tendencies in the end, but they’ve all changed in subtle ways throughout the 117 chapters. duna and haesol never officially start dating, but that’s honestly that most realistic path.
i also love that there are 3 end couples who all have their own unique endings. gyerin and jooyeon represent the typical happy romance ending. wookyung and minho represent the toxic abuser x victim ending with them accepting their codependence. and duna and haesol, in my opinion, are the most interesting of the bunch. they will probably never have an even power dynamic no matter how much time they spend with each other. their relationship is frustrating and ambiguous, even in the very end. they stand in the very middle of happy vs sad ending, not knowing which side to lean to. it’s fitting and realistic. will they ever be happy together? can duna ever accept haesol as her boyfriend? they’ve agreed to start healing together, but we never find out if they definitively succeed. and that’s how some relationships are in real life. i admire the author for exploring a more mundane type of ending and believe that these types of endings are more needed in romance fiction.
also note that the original author quit halfway through the story, so some things are bound to be inconsistent.
overall, don’t approach this story with the expectation of it going like a typical reverse harem or romance story. it’s truly unique in every aspects of the word.
Right?? I feel like those who always want a fairy tale ending despite it betraying character profiles are just kids that shouldn’t be reading this kind of stuff tbh. Not everyone can be “redeemed” and real life stories don’t always have a clean happy resolution. The ending makes sense for what the character’s personalities are. If I’m going to contrast it to another manhwa it would be waterside night, where I feel the ending dynamic was so forced and OOC in order to give the reader’s the happy ending they wanted to justify all the hurt that happened. Which is wild imo bc people trying to resolve sexual assault/rape by making the victim and abuser get together in some faux happy relationship just feels archaic and gross to me. I prefer the depiction in this bl sidestory where it is obviously not healthy and the dynamic isn’t romanticized

as someone who read the whole thing it felt like the message of the whole story was just "evil people are redeemable when they fall in love and change". and call me too woke fiction like that is genuinely problematic when it gets popular like LTIT did.
i agree that this story is definitely for mature audiences. its not 18+ just for the sexual violence but also for the ambiguous themes that the younger demographic wouldn't be able to grasp.
lowkey though i think minho and wookyung are happy together in their own way...or at least, they would be more miserable without each other than with.

It felt like the author of waterside night tried to pretend like the start of the story never happened or something with the way all the mental trauma inflicted on the MC just evaporated into thin air near the mid-end. I’m so glad to see another person on here that can appreciate good characterizations and more nuanced stories. And yeah they’re probably better off in their toxic codependency than without each other and I like how the author didn’t try to sugar coat their relationship
