How awful, this manga is just full of rape there's nothing about it that has any actual substance I'm going to guess the uke gets Stockholm Syndrome
Lmfao, this is just too accurate of an assessment. Rather than getting creative with the plot, the rape just becomes more gruesome in the novel.
If you're looking for historical yaoi, it's quite hard to find them w/o rape. It's quite depressing. Even the ones I particularly adore feature rape, I guess a healthy and wholesome relationship is just not a thing.
I couldn't access direct literature but read summaries. So I was quite restricted in my search, and the story 'Catsleeve' references homosexuality between a man and a fox spirit. Once reincarnated, the relationship between the man and fox spirit, as well as the flow of events, closely follow Emperor Ai's and Dong Xian's life. I would say this story is far more accurate in revealing the true relationship between the couple.
This novel/ manga, on the other hand, isn't. And the author has definitely taken creative liberties:
1) Dong Xian is a bandit.
2) Dong Xian entering a duel and being awarded the position of Emperor's attendant.
2) Emperor Ai being interested in Dong Xian for his similarities to his royal uncle, for whom the Emperor harbored unrequited feelings.
3) Dong Xian being persecuted for harming the Emperor.
4)Dong Xian's subsequent attempts to escape the Emperor's clutches.
5) No mention of Dong Xian already being married. Or any mention of his remaining family.
These plot-points were the focus of this novel/ manga (while being interspersed with tons of gruesome rape).
The mention of Dong Xian's ascend in ranks, building a residence for him outside the palace, and being awarded priceless riches make brief appearances (just a couple chapters, more toward the end). The Emperor's relationship with his grandma and wife also make minor appearances.
So my earlier comment: "This story is purely fictional. It leaves out a lot of the politics and takes excessive liberties when it comes to the emperor's reign and personal llife" -> I stand corrected. I did come to this conclusion with limited facts.
At the moment, since the focus of this novel doesn't stray from the fictitious plot-points, I would characterize this novel/ manga fiction inspired by the relationship between Emperor Ai and Dong Xian. In real life, the Emperor seems quite indulgent, not the sadistic and ruthless bastard he is portrayed as in this novel. And Dong Xian in this novel is so unlike the one in real life.
So rather than based on true events, I prefer inspired by true events.
As I said earlier, even though I highly doubt regular readers to get interested i history, but read the research papers published on the cut sleeve paradox, it's taken from several fables and the general premise of Emperor Ai and his male consort. The fables as mentioned and referenced in the research papers talk abt a mountain bandit/a thief/ a student who gets caught by a superior being and they fall in love. Emperor Ai as posted in traditional English language is a much watered down character compared to his actions mentioned in at least 5 different poems. It was also reference in the early 10th century by then Korean traveller Dong Hwan. The male consort was not his ONLY conquest, he had a very strong relation with a male prostitute who was later murdered under mysterious circumstances. Emperor Ai was well known to gas light his lovers. Manipulate, reduce their self worth and eventually trap them and make them work the way they want to.
Obviously as you stated the artist has obviously taken a great deal of artistic liberties as it was mentioned on their Weibo account.
It is a terrible story, yes, I agree, something I wish never happened in the first place. However most of the concubine histories in China ended on such tragic notes. It's nothing new.
Is this really completed? This story has so much potential it looks amazing already I'll be sad if it's done :(
