As annoying as it is, the way Seth is somewhat guarded is pretty realistic considering the way Carl treated him. Referring back to the chapter, he punched Aiden because of what he said about choking; that clearly was a trigger. As he said to Seth, he said, "Carl choked you cause he doesn't love you." NOT JUSTIFYING IT!! BUT, IN many cases, abuse victims cope with the abuse with the idea of the perpetrator "loving" them.
So I think his reaction to that was pretty realistic. And I hate seeing comments brush it off, as it brushes off how damaging abuse is.
The romance aspect is boring and annoys me every time it pops up; interesting plot, boring romance subplot. It's the classic "she has something I need to save someone else"/"she might be able to save them..." trope, and it bores me to death. I can just ignore it, though; it doesn't seem too bad.
