Jaehyuk sounding like a hypocrite about cost is actually a fitting end to the story lol. Based on the full context of this chapter and previous ones, I think he's mentioning cost because there's too much to, realistically, eat between them all. So Jaehyuk is commenting on how the cost put into this is dumb, because it's all going to go to waste. Jaehyuk now caring enough to internalize these kinds of thoughts really shows Jaehyuk's growth as a person. Because unlike in previous chapters, when he was throwing money around without a care (Spending all that money on Garam's clothes, knowing it would drain his bank account, is the best example), he is now grounded enough to understand the actual value of money and the consequences of spending what you don't have. You can argue that having to work for money was what made him change, but I do believe Garam is the main reason he now lives with a more frugal perspective. This is because Garam always kicks up a fuss whenever it comes to any financial stuff, and over time that would definitely rub off on someone you're living with. My biggest argument to the lack of change is that if you don't move past a mindset, habits will continue, and the best way to break a habit is to be shamed/learned out of it lol. But of course, I am just a reader just like everyone else, so this is just speculation.
