I’m Asian not black but could someone more educated than me explain the biggest issues in this manhwa’s premise? Is it the “black savior” complex or just the fact that they are even trying to write a story based in this setting and time period without being a part of the communities that suffered from oppression and racism? I genuinely want to understand.
It's really is both. This white savior complex has been shown for years throughout media to paint white people as some type of angel towards black people even though all they did was oppress us more. For example, him letting them "be free" doesn't fix anything they don't have anywhere to go nor most likely where they're family are because they've been separated. This author's first mistake was making the character white.
This author is a Korean author writing about slavery, natives, and war and turning it into a love story between the two.
For me it’s mainly the choice to make a white mc for this Era when it’s strictly integral to indigenous and black history.
The white saviour part is just a nail in the coffin especially the extra details of “He was perfect, handsome and rich, but lost everything to the war”, slaves had nothing and still lost much more during this time but were framed to feel bad for the privileged losing stuff for doing the “right thing” thing when the right thing is just basic human rights which is fighting against slavery. I also don’t like how the author showed his soldiers being mainly white when it was mostly black and indigenous people fighting for their lives during this time period.
The whole sarcastic/joke of “humble slave” is just disgusting.
I think the root of the issue is that periods of genocide/slavery should not be used as settings unless you’re intending to be historically accurate and respectful to those who were affected by said periods.
As a black person who grew in Canada I learned about black and indigenous history in Both America and Canada and to watch be used a backdrop for romance is honestly insane, these things are still very recent for a lot of people subject wise, to use to promote media centering a “white mans suffering” is just insane.

I reeeeeeeeally want the top to fall first so he can suffer a bit and work on toning down that ego
