I think or at least I interpret jaxx direction with the story is that they don't want hide of cover up the nasty side post civil war America but to show the horrors of it and how it society effects the dynamic and romantic relationship between 2 gay men that come from different backgrounds and live in a society that not only disapproved the general idea of an homosexual couple but also the idea of 2 different races loving each other
I love how the majority of the characters have different features, makes the story so much more interesting. Its so rare to find a bl with this kind of diversity

I totally agree. I hate this story because of the way rape is handled and shit, but Im not exactly sure why people feel the need to side with any of the characters. This is such a complicated situation, where one party isn't aware of his wrongdoings and is being forced to pay for such without actually knowing anything. The other party endured gruesome trauma by the hands of the former party which entirely changed his life.
