At first I sort of sympathized with him needing to hide his feelings, but now learning that he essentially used his authority to FORCE Viera to "prove her worth" so he could marry her, all without her knowledge or consent -- that's messed up.
Imagine learning that a guy who had a crush on you in high school, used his family connections and higher status to secretly train you to be the perfect wife. Meanwhile, you're super stressed out, working long unhealthy hours, and you've been secretly isolated from being able to make any connections with the opposite sex. Now you're past the normal marriage age with no dating experience because this guy has been secretly using his power to groom you -- and when you finally find a great man who truly sees you and wants to be with you, that earlier guy keeps trying to break up your engagement.

And like after being a court mage HE could have been the one to raise his name, achievement, influence and power over his grandmother and society itself.
