Well, as with all the homophobia presented in this manga (and some sexism too), I think that was just another way to show how hateful this society/time period is. I dont think that the author is homophobic, racist, or sexist; just that the characters they have written are.
The jump from page 29 to 30 of chapter 4 really caught me off guard haha
