A part of Sisyphus' lore in mythology is that after he helps a river god retrieve is daughter from Zues who basically kidnapped her. Zues was big mad and sent Thanatos (basically Death) to chain Sispyhus in the Underworld. But Sisyphus tricks Thanatos into demonstrating how the chains worked. Thus bound Death instead and while trapped, no human on Earth could die.
