It’s such a stereotypical trope authors use when writing Russian characters. It’s always either the Russian mafia, or if they’re into sports, it’s either hockey, basketball, racing, or some other stereotypical sport.
There’s this weird tendency to associate Russian characters with the exact same handful of things every time—mafia, hockey, racing, etc. Like, can we give them some variety for once?
Totally get what you are saying but you also need to ask “why” a character is the way they are for example if the character is a Russian farmer -> why do they have to be Russian specifically and writing a better backstory than “mafia” is takes more effort unfortunately
Yeah, exactly. If he’s a mafia boss, the author doesn’t need to over-explain his background, but if he’s a farmer involved in some conspiracy, then obviously you need more backstory and worldbuilding. Still, authors always fall back on the same stereotypes—the Russian mafia, “Arab harem,” Black characters, etc. Like, there are literally so many countries and cultures they could explore, but they rarely go beyond these clichés. Why not try Australia or somewhere else, actually research the culture, and incorporate it into the story instead of recycling the same stereotypes over and over?
