Really cute, low-key sad story. Basic rundown is the crown prince does the queen selection, chooses the knight of the girl instead, reveals later that they'd met as kids when the knight mistook him for his recently deceased dog. This is the couple on the cover, btw

First, unfortunately this is where the manga ends, it leads into where the novel starts with the Chancellor showing up to beg Rei to come back. The manga makes it look like he's a villain plotting but he just shows up, climbs the stairs (Rei built them after Albert moved in so he could easily get food for them) and collapses at Rei's feet in tears and sweat along with the two knights he brought (because that tower is MASSIVE, imagine all those stairs, rip) and begs him to come back because the King genuinely wants to make things right and also everyone in the kingdom and other nations are being super passive aggressive about it and they're low-key afraid a rebellion might break out.

Rei is not miserable in the novel, everyone is kind and caring with him and anyone who causes him even mild discomfort is taken out by either Albert, the King, or Mireille.

Yes, he loses his magic and becomes fully disabled at the end, but it's not as bad as it sounds. It gets angsty but the ending is very sweet. Here's a snippet from the last chapter:

Seeing how dark the room was, I realized it was already getting late in the afternoon and hurriedly stood up.

Just sitting there in a daze until it got dark—I must be out of my mind.

And to think I didn’t even notice that Albert had left.
I suppose he must have been startled too, seeing me standing there in the dimming room without a single light on.

I looked at him apologetically, and he reached into a pocket inside his uniform to pull something out and hand it to me.

I took it without thinking and examined the object resting in my palm closely. It looked like a small bundle of parchment strips, bound together with a string threaded through a hole at the end.

This sense of déjà vu… I seemed to remember frantically flipping through something like this right before a test.

A compact bundle that fits in the palm of my hand… A vocabulary book?

But what was written on the pages didn’t look like letters—it looked more like pictures drawn in ink.

Seeing me tilt my head in confusion, Albert tapped the “vocabulary book” sitting in my hand with his finger.

I grew confused, not quite grasping his intent, but Albert, paying no heed, kept patiently tapping the drawings on the “vocabulary book”.

The stylized illustrations were good enough to belong in a picture book, but I could tell they were hand-drawn.

Two triangles poking out from a round outline, three whiskers added on each side, and a tail sticking out at a sharp angle.

The silent standoff continued between me, at a loss, and Albert, who kept pointing, until I finally couldn’t take it anymore.

What is this? What’s so special about this drawing? I mean, this is obviously *that*, right?

“......Cat."

I muttered the word as if it were a foreign tongue, looking at Albert, who was acting just as strange.

I thought the exchange would end there, left full of unanswered questions, but Albert nodded and spoke up.

“Neko.”

“Huh?” I looked up at his face, but he paid no attention to my surprise, simply turning the page of his vocabulary book and pointing to the next picture.
Then, just like before, he tapped it with his finger.

“..................Dog.”

“Inu.”

“Fish,”

“Sakana.”

Page by page, nodding with satisfaction as he repeated after me—the words were in Japanese, but spoken in Albert’s voice.

“Snow,”

“Yuki.”

“..................”

He urged me with his eyes, asking for the next one, but the words got stuck in my throat and my face contorted.

Albert never showed any signs of distress when I didn’t speak. And yet, seeing him like that, I’d been afraid his heart might someday drift away from me.

But I was wrong.

He wasn’t frustrated or burdened by the fact that I’d lost the ability to speak the language of this world.

Most people would have told me to study, right?
They’d have looked uneasy at being unable to communicate with me, wouldn’t they?

But he didn’t. Not even once.

He must have thought that if I couldn’t speak the language of this world, then he would simply speak the language of mine instead.

To him, there was no giving up on me—on Rei Sasamihara.

“……A-Albert…”

“Rei.”

As his arms immediately wrapped around me in response, my heart melted, realizing he hadn’t changed at all.

No matter what I lose, Albert will always...

That night, what happened was only natural.

Even as he held me in his arms, I was the one who reached out first, gazing at him with passion.

I fixed my gaze on him, filled with complete trust—the certainty that I could surrender everything to him—and a desire to accept every ounce of his love in return.
