Everyone in the comments: Helene is awful boo get her out of here
Me, utterly adoring her as the best female character I’ve seen written: she’s amazing, actually,
If you reread this story from the beginning, I’m starting to think Helene only hates the fake Lyla because she took the real Lyla’s place and she might be looking for a way to bring the real Lyla back by becoming Emperor.
The fact she snaps at our Lyla calling her “sister” paired with the way she says “how could you do this…what have you done?” makes me think Helene witnessed the original Lyla dying on her and our Lyla mistook that for Helene trying to kill her when actually the real Lyla died of something else (perhaps poisoning?). Also love the detail that Helene swapped out the Dragon’s Heart and that’s why it never worked for Kian in the beginning chapters.
I also think Helene is a lot more complex than people give her credit for. She’s probably thd only OG FL in a story who maintains a consistent presence in the narrative as neither good nor bad.
And yes I’m aware she’s an antagonist but look at the way she shows signs of caring about Lyla (from checking up on her reluctantly to flinching at the revelation Lyla might die to looking sentimentally sad when she attacks Lyla and says she wants her to disappear) and how there are actually hints that Helene and original Lyla were close (see: Helene seeming betrayed by Lyla for an unknown reason, how protag!Lyla even states “why did the original Lyla stay in this awful family anyways?” suggesting she had a reason I.e Helene, and how protag!Lyla’s first words to Helene are “who are you?” alongside how the next thing Helene says to protag!Lyla is “don’t call me your sister”)
and I think we’re going to eventually get a revelation that Helene cared deeply for the original Lyla and is just a twisted person who happens to want her REAL sister back no matter if she has to “disappear” the current Lyla to do so :’)
(Also food for thought: it’s hinted the original Lyla still exists and she’s the one able to eject our protag into the real world. More food for thought: Paris says Lyla and Helene are similar to each other (though he never reveals /how/). You also have to wonder too if “the voice” is future!Lyla. And if so, why is she putting her own self through this hell and why is it necessary she got the emperor and Sienna to take the steps they did to bring her into existence? And why is Helene so prevalent throughout the story despite only starting to take noticeable action in the plot as of the chapter 40 mark? It’s all so curious and I definitely recommend a reread of the story after you catch up to try and catch some details that are definitely being foreshadowed very early on~)
I feel dumb for only just now realizing that the person the ML and this dude are looking for is not either of the first princesses but our main character herself
I'm guessing both of the first princesses are dead (and/or thought to be dead) but she's the only one unaccounted for and the next best fit for queen so they're trying to search for her...not realizing she's trapped in the body of a bird (and that her body might have "vanished" and melded with that bird's form: hence why we keep seeing her human form from time to time as somehow her human body got tucked inside the bird one through some magic bullshit lmao)
Also one thing that really bothers me: the MC can write, can't she? I don't know if it's ever explicitly stated that she can but if she wants to prove she's smarter than she looks and got transposed into the body of a bird why not just write "Hi I'm the 14th princess" in the ground or something? Better yet, an easy way for the captain to tell if she's sentient or not is to just tell her to do certain things like "move two footsteps to the right", "hop off the desk and hop on it again three times exactly no stopping", "fly from my shoulder to my desk to my chair" etc. etc. to prove that the bird understands human language very goddamn well
First you should write a spoiler advise so people can know its spoiler.
Second. She can't do that. She doesn't know they are looking for her.She was always a outcast so it's more probable they would kill her if she wasn't the one remaining of the royal family.Thats why she can't just go and say...." I'm the 8th princess"
She is afraid.
I hope it helps ╥﹏╥
ghjgfhj i apologize i wasn't sure whether to mark it as spoilers or not since truth be told this is just my speculation of what's going on in the plot (and yeah i know the wording makes it sound like im confident this is the truth but no im actually not lol. im just tired and I haven't read past chapter 11 so for all i know i could be wrong
tbf i know she doesn't know they might be looking for her. My main problem is that it's painfully obvious the author is avoiding trying to solve the communication problem between them to drag it out as long as possible. It's been suggested the MC can write (she can draw a circle in the ground and she can read so it's hypothetically possible) and the captain keeps thinking that the MC is smarter than a normal bird so why doesn't the MC try writing to the captain to prove she's trustworthy enough to help him and why doesn't the ML try anything he can to prove that she's just as smart as he believes??
All the author has to do is address these questions once - maybe the ML does try telling her to do a dumb thing a human would do and she refuses because she doesn't want to embarrass herself (reinforcing the ML's suspicions that, nah, he's insane for thinking she's sentient so he never tries asking her to do something human-like again) and maybe the MC can't write because she's afraid that'll put suspicion on her that something of her intelligence level can be trusted to roam freely - and I'd be satisfied.
I totally get where you're coming from though tho so thanks for jumping in. My bad on the spoiler part, so I apologize for that
As someone who's read the novel, I could honestly only understand this chapter because of my intimate knowledge of this part of the story (which I'll explain below if anyone like me was trying to read the newest chapter 38 and couldn't understand what was happening). And, no offense to the translator because I do realize that it takes a lot of work to scanalate things, but this chapter did come off as if it was Google translated ;w; I hard a hard time following what was going on and the constant translator's note partnered with the fact that the translations felt nonsensical and all over the place made it hard to feel immersed in the manga compared to prior chapters
That said, if the translator ever reads this,, I would love to work for free on fixing translations to make it more readable for this manga if you're up for it! I love this manga a lot so I'm willing to fix grammar and writing to make it make more readable for other readers to enjoy,,,
As for the summary of chapter 38's events: Aria hired her maid's brother to stockpile sugar. She wants him to buy as much of it as possible at this moment so she can have a secret supply of sugar that she will be selling later. She knows that some Pinot dude (you know the silver-haired dude who gave gifts to Mielle? Yeah, him) who is an insider for the aristocracy will be cutting off the trade routes so the nobles will no longer be able to easily access their precious sugar products. This makes cakes and stuff really rare so the nobles will go bankrupt over getting as much sugar as possible as they are addicted to it. The nobles are more impacted by the sugar cut than the aristocrats are, thus Aria suspects this whole sugar drama is a power struggle between the Crown Prince's group and the nobility. She plans to use the sugar to make profit which will come into play later. However, she notes she doesn't want to be involved in the power struggle as it might be dangerous for her.
Other events that happen this chapter include: Aria being surprised that the Crown Prince gave control of the casino over to a noble, knowing that he was incompetent in the past and shredded his image into ruins by keeping the casino in his control. She indirectly implies that the Crown Prince wouldn't do something that she merely suggested he do in the last meeting and Asher is curious why she believes he wouldn't. He suggests that the Crown Prince took advantage of the situation and realized what he had to do to tip the power struggle in his favor. Aria thinks this as part of the butterfly effect (aka, her actions somehow domino'd over until it reached the Crown Prince who then somehow changed through mysterious means to do her suggestion i.e. he wizened up).
Sarah also invites Aria over to meet her husband, the Marquis, and Aria accepts, knowing she can use a connection to the Marquis to her advantage.
Then there's also the ending but it's clear what's happening there: Mielle's gonna be visiting the "princess" Iris again
This manga's been here since like about a week ago under its Japanese name:
http://www.mangago.me/read-manga/inu_no_naku_mura/
not sure why it's been double-posted but both only cover chapter one regardless
Interesting take on the zombie genre. While this doesn't seem like anything new it's somehow??? So refreshing??? I like the main character and the the zombie hunter/zombie gal also poses an interesting mystery.
Also like how, for once, there's implications that people knew a zombie apocalypse was coming ahead of time and trained up people to fight it it seems. The only other time I've seen this is when people come from the future but that doesn't seem to be the case here so :Oc im excited to learn more about the lore of this world
Woah this is so cool. The world-building is already phenomenal (I'm a sucker for a world of mysterious entities and strange relics) but the fact that the story is teasing of many possibilities is A++
Also, I totally thought the "strange relics" were from modern Earth but after seeing the arrowhead pendant thing I'm guessing this is an alternate world entirely (which?? Yes?? More room for creativity!!!)
so can someone tell me how they're considered mutants and how people know that they're mutants just by their looks? Both leads look just like a rabbit and fox, not a hybrid, and all the characters in the cast have ears so how am I supposed to tell the difference between the side characters and the two main leads for who is a mutant or not???
Lmao I was so confused to like
I think certain species have certain body types in this world and people would mostly correlate these body types with certain species. In Mei han's case, she has a cat's body which is slim and tall, but has bunney ears and other little appearances. Bunnies in this world are typically short and cute which is not the body type Mei han has. That's what makes her a mutant.

Finally found the raws for this manga and the next few chapters are actually fun, particularly if you like figuring out what’s going on with Helene, Lyla/Fian, or getting some progress on plot points
Spoilers:
-Chapter 71 is start of next arc (going to Atlantis) Seems like it’s Daniel’s (blue dragon guy’s) turn in the story.
-baby Helene shows up next chapter. I am obligated to say she’s very adorable and it sucks what’s happened to her
-we are coming back to the plot point of why Helene bought magic stone bombs. The story has already given away why she would do that (twice, at that)
-Helene is a very tragic and sympathetic person. Won’t spoil what the heck is up with her but let’s just say she’s definitely neither a good person nor a bad person and I love the intrigue of her last words to Lyla :) especially because the implications of them are pretty damn curious
-we’re addressing the Helene scene shown in the first chapter. And leaving open the mystery of how Lyla betrayed her (I-I think but it’s not exactly clear)
-if you hate the Emperor now…oh he gets worse :Dc the Empress too :Dc
-Fian/Lyla is a thing. Frankly I’m ehhh on them but to shippers of them you get your wishes lmao
-empire political situations continue to happen. Lyla almost gets locked up. Helene and Lyla definitely should get to be sisters and their interactions make me awwwww over them (also Helene is such a well written character she’s absolutely the most interesting and nuanced character in this story it’s great omg)
