This chapter absolutely broke my heart. They did an incredible job visualising the exact moment the realisation hits Dane's face. Watching him piece together Grayson's reasoning and seeing the sheer heartbreak when Dane realizes Grayson didn't even understand that he was a victim of severe abuse was devastating. Grayson staying with that kid, and making sure the father knew the child didn't run away, came from a place of deep, unhealed neglect. He was doing for that child what no one ever did for him. Looking at the bigger picture of Ashley and Koi's parenting and without justifying or defending their choices, you can see how their own background and untreated traumas bled into every one of their children, especially Grayson. I cant fully bring myself to truly hate Ashley or koi for their poor decisions because they genuinely didn't know any better; Ashley lacked self-control, so he projected that intense insecurity onto his children, firmly believing harsh punishment was the only way to keep them safe and controlled. Meanwhile, Koi's complicity is just as heavy. Even under a literal threat to his life, just random phone calls every now and then to his kids just wasn't enough (Even in the face of danger, he certainly could have afforded security) and i can go on and on about what he could've, should've done to be in those kids lives than complete distance. By failing them, they left the children entirely in the hands of Dr. Stewart. His twisted, clinical obsession with their genetics made him the absolute worst role model possible. He systematically imprinted his malice onto them, molding them into the 'monsters' everyone else fears, especially Grayson, who bore the brunt of it as a literal research subject. It's just tragic all around. (Repost since i couldn't see it any longer)
Dawg Grayson was not a victim of SEVERE abuse by ashley and koi Feather
Abuse isn’t only the extreme cases. Emotional neglect and repeated harm still counts. The story makes that painstakingly clear. If you don’t see the harm, that’s your interpretation. It’s still there in the story.

Emotional neglect I agree it is harmful but its not a case of severe abuse in this case it was misguided punishment by ashley escalated. Still, Not a SEVERE form of abuse.

Grayson’s trauma can’t be judged by whether he was physically hurt. His alexithymia(I've concluded this because his behaviour in the novel exactly mirrors it's definition) makes emotional and psychological harm hit much harder because he can’t identify his feelings, understand his distress, or communicate what’s wrong. That’s exactly why he shuts down, internalizes everything, and reacts with confusion instead of speaking up. His behavior in the story already shows the damage: emotional detachment, trouble forming bonds, constant hypervigilance, and a warped sense of self. For a child who literally didn’t have the mental tools to understand any of this, emotional neglect is severe abuse. Saying it’s “not severe” because he wasn’t beaten is exactly how emotional abuse gets minimized and ignored.

Well, he was sending his 10yr old children to pheromones parties. Idk how much of a trauma that would have caused if Nathaniel and Grayson were as emotional as Chase.

Dude he tried to kill his dad, and all that stuff against Chase too, yeah locking him up was a shitty way to punish him since he wouldnt understand why he was getting locked up he was thoroughly loved by both his parents throughout his childhood. Im not sure what extent talking to a child can go when hes throwing his brother infront of buses either.

Bro, Ashley never loved his Alpha children. Any of them. He was there to protect them and teach them and fulfill the parental duty but he never loved them. He see them as competitors for Koi's love. For him, the manifested children were monsters and the one who wasn't manifest(chase), he thinks that he would also become a monster after manifestation sk he didn't bother about his emotions as well.

Eitherway bro it was poor parenting and execution more than it was severe abuse and the circumstances to why his punishments were enacted were worse than the punishments themselves
