In the loop is caused by a ritual done by specific villagers, and the loop wouldn't end until a certain condition is met(I forget the specifics). I wonder if the villagers have insight that they don't have.
If the twins were taking turns with him. It seem at first he was with the stoic twin im not sure when they were switching or im not good at telling them apart.
