i’m missing some detiails since it’s been a while but basically tj hired someone to harm ian which ended up with him having a broken leg so that he could make ian stay in the gang sinde he had plans on leaving- and since his leg got broken tj gave ian like a pile of debt which he had to pay off (not sure how it came about but pretty sure it’s from the injury) and it was basically shackling him to the gang . and deep down tj knew that ian knew the truth but was too afraid to face it or was turning a blind eye to it- and so when ian snapped and finally admitted he knew the truth tj was shocked because he didn’t think that he would actually say it aloud since it would cause him a lot of pain to admit as well

As far as i can remember, tj hided some sons to broke his leg as he(ian) used to do skating and wanted to left the org to living ordinary life. Obviously tj didn’t want to get apart and did that.
That's why their relationship is toxic feom the strt, only physical. Idk why ppl ship them so much ヽ(`Д´)ﾉ
